篠山城 大書院

Sasayama Castle Daishoin is a historical building within Sasayama Castle in Tanba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture. Sasayama Castle was constructed in 1609 under Tokugawa Ieyasu's orders as strategic fortification. The castle was built in six months through tenshu-maru construction using multiple daimyo. Daishoin was a residential building during the Edo period, housing members of the Aoyama clan and later Matsudaira clan governing Sasayama domain. Original structures were largely destroyed during the Meiji Restoration, but preservation restored buildings including Daishoin.

Daishoin represents Edo-period samurai residential architecture within a castle complex, demonstrating traditional elements including tatami-mat rooms, sliding doors, wooden construction, and spatial arrangements reflecting social hierarchy. The structure shows how castle inhabitants lived and conducted administrative duties. Daishoin's preservation contributes to Sasayama Castle and the Kawara-machi merchant district's historical value, creating a preserved townscape. The building illustrates samurai culture lifestyle and organizational principles during feudal Japan.

Visitors tour Daishoin viewing interior rooms, architectural features, and period-appropriate furnishings or displays recreating historical living conditions. Sasayama Castle Daishoin is accessible from JR Sasayamaguchi Station or Tanba-Sasayama Station via buses or taxis, approximately 15 to 20 minutes. From Osaka or Kyoto, Sasayama is 60 to 90 minutes via JR limited express and local trains with transfers. The castle grounds are in central Sasayama's historical district, walking distance from Kawara-machi merchant quarter.
