Suigou Boat Service operates traditional wooden boats along the historic waterways of Sawara in Chiba Prefecture, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's Edo period river transport system. The service navigates the Ono River, which flows through the heart of this well-preserved merchant town that flourished from the 17th to 19th centuries as a major rice distribution center. These waterways once carried goods between Edo (Tokyo) and northern Japan, making Sawara one of the country's most prosperous river ports.

The boat rides showcase 150 traditional wooden buildings lining the riverbanks, many designated as Important Cultural Properties. The area represents one of Japan's finest examples of a merchant quarter from the Edo period, with original warehouses, shops, and residences reflecting the architectural styles of wealthy rice merchants. The gentle 30-minute journey allows visitors to observe daily life along the historic canal system while guides explain the cultural significance of notable structures.

Passengers experience authentic transportation methods using traditional rokkasen boats, shallow-draft vessels specifically designed for river navigation. The boats pass under 13 stone and wooden bridges, including the iconic Ja-Ja Bridge that creates distinctive sounds when crossed by vehicles. Visitors can observe traditional crafts workshops, sake breweries, and the Ino Tadataka Museum dedicated to Japan's famous cartographer who lived in Sawara.

Spring cherry blossoms from late March to early April create spectacular reflections on the water surface. Summer festivals in July feature illuminated boats and traditional performances. Autumn foliage from November to December provides colorful scenery, while winter operations offer clear views of historic architecture without seasonal crowds. The Sawara Grand Festival in July and October showcases elaborate floats and traditional music along the waterways.

Suigou Boat Service operates from JR Sawara Station, accessible via the JR Narita Line approximately 60 minutes from Tokyo Station or 15 minutes from Narita Airport. Boats depart every 30 minutes from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM with extended hours during peak seasons. Standard 30-minute rides cost ¥1,320 for adults and ¥660 for children. The boat landing is located 5 minutes walking from Sawara Station near the Katori City Tourism Information Center.
