자주 묻는 질문

Wakayama is renowned for Mount Koya (Koyasan), a sacred Buddhist mountain and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's also famous for Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails, Nachi Falls (Japan's tallest waterfall), and producing high-quality plums, particularly ume (Japanese apricots).

Mount Koya is located in northern Wakayama Prefecture. Founded in 816 by monk Kukai, it's the center of Shingon Buddhism in Japan. The mountain houses over 100 temples, including Okunoin cemetery with over 200,000 graves, and offers temple lodging experiences for visitors.

From Osaka, take the JR Kuroshio limited express (1 hour) or Nankai Electric Railway (45 minutes) to Wakayama city. From Tokyo, take the shinkansen to Shin-Osaka, then transfer. For Mount Koya, use the Nankai Koyasan line from Namba in Osaka.

Wakayama is famous for Wakayama ramen (tonkotsu shoyu style), high-quality plums and plum wine (umeshu), persimmons, and fresh seafood. The region produces about 60% of Japan's plums. Kaiseki cuisine is also notable at temple lodgings on Mount Koya.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best weather for hiking and sightseeing. Cherry blossom season and autumn foliage are particularly beautiful. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter sees some snow in mountainous areas.

Key attractions include Nachi Falls and Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine, Shirahama's hot springs and white sand beaches, Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine, the historic Kumano Kodo trails, and Wakayama Castle in the capital city.
