Comico Art Museum Yufuin

The Comico Art Museum Yufuin represents the NHN Group's first offline cultural facility, established to create a space where high-level contemporary art can be shared with diverse audiences. The museum was designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma and serves as a contemporary art and design museum in Yufuin, situated along the Oita River in one of Japan's most famous hot spring resort areas.

The museum stands in a location overlooking the majestic ridgeline of Mt. Yufudake, with the main building featuring exterior walls made of yakisugi (charred cedar) and a pitched roof inspired by traditional satoyama villages. Architect Kengo Kuma incorporated the concept of "unevenness" in the design, arranging several small roofs to create harmony with the natural landscape.

The museum showcases works by internationally acclaimed contemporary Japanese artists. Featured exhibitions include works by Takashi Murakami and Hiroshi Sugimoto, with Murakami's representative "Flower" themed series blending traditional Japanese painting elements with manga, animation, and video game cultures. The museum has also exhibited works by Yayoi Kusama, Tatsuo Miyajima, and Kohei Nawa. The facility combines traditional Satoyama village culture with contemporary art in a cutting-edge space.

The museum is located approximately 10 minutes' walk from JR Yufuin Station and 7 minutes by car from Yufuin IC. From Oita, visitors can follow National Route 210 towards Yufuin for approximately 60 minutes by car. Unfortunately, there is no nearby bus stop available for public transportation access. Advance reservations are recommended through the museum's website, with online reservations offering a 200 yen discount on admission fees.
