The easiest way is by train. Take the JR Limited Express Fuji Excursion from Shinjuku Station to Kawaguchiko Station, which takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes. You can also take the Chuo Line to Kofu Station, Yamanashi’s main city, in about 1.5 hours.
Popular attractions include Fuji Five Lakes, Chureito Pagoda, Shosenkyo Gorge, Oshino Hakkai village, and Kiyosato Highlands. Wine lovers can explore Yamanashi’s vineyards, while nature enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, camping, and hot springs.
Yamanashi is great for hiking, cycling, and camping around the Fuji Five Lakes and Japanese Alps. You can also enjoy boating, fishing, and nature walks in Shosenkyo Gorge. In winter, there are ski resorts like Fujiten and Yeti.
The most famous dish is Hōtō noodles, a thick and chewy noodle soup made with miso and vegetables. Yamanashi is also known for grapes, peaches, and wines, as well as Yoshida udon, a local chewy noodle dish.
Yamanashi is beautiful year-round. Spring (March–April) has cherry blossoms, summer (June–August) is great for hiking and outdoor activities, autumn (October–November) has colorful leaves, and winter (December–February) offers clear views of Mount Fuji and winter sports.
