The Aichi Museum of Art, located in the heart of Nagoya, stands as one of Japan's premier public art institutions. Established in 1992 and reopened in its current location within the Aichi Arts Center in 2019, the museum occupies the 8th through 10th floors of the distinctive high-rise building in Sakae, the city's vibrant commercial district.

The museum's permanent collection exceeds 2,800 works, with particular strength in 20th-century art from both Western and Japanese traditions. Notable holdings include works by Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Paul Klee, alongside significant pieces by modern Japanese masters such as Fujishima Takeji and Kishida Ryusei. The collection strategy deliberately focuses on art from 1900 onward, creating a comprehensive survey of modern artistic movements.

Visitors encounter rotating exhibitions from the permanent collection alongside special exhibitions that attract major international loans. The spacious galleries benefit from natural light and thoughtful design that enhances the viewing experience. The museum's location on upper floors provides unexpected views across Nagoya's skyline, creating a distinctive atmosphere compared to traditional ground-level museums. A museum shop and café serve visitors seeking souvenirs or refreshment during their visit.

The museum sits directly above Sakae Station, accessible via the Higashiyama and Meijo subway lines, making it exceptionally convenient for travelers. The Aichi Arts Center complex also houses concert halls and a theater, often creating a lively cultural atmosphere. General admission to the permanent collection costs ¥500 for adults, with discounts available for students and seniors.

What other travelers are saying about Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art

The Aichi Triennale entry is 2100 yen and you get access to 3 different museums (including this Aichi Museum of Art), but they’re quite far from each other. We only have time for this location, so we can only speak about this exhibition. Beautiful installations, but most of it is really just on 2 floors, 10F and 8F. The installations on 1F, B1F and B2F are so isolated and underwhelming. The exhibits on 10F are quite good, and 8F is OK as well, but all of them are very contemporary and subjective. Probably not worth the price, but if you’re really into art and have time to check out the other 2 museums, then 2100 yen is justified.

Went to see Animal Animals Animals with old Japanese doors that were painted by old samurai guys in the Meiji period and what not because the Emperor had taken their swords away and made them paint furniture and stuff. It was really good to see how good at painting the old guys were, I wish there had been a bit more English to explain things as I was too lazy to use my phone for each one. I liked how they used gold.

I went this museum in 2016 for just going to Pablo Picasso exhibition. This exhibition really broaden my my knowledge about the painter. Museum itself wasn't too big and beautifully decorated.

I went on a weekday so it was not crowded at all. Decent exhibits and it was enjoyable to view them without much of a crowd. A little annoying with limited photography allowed and no particularly notable exhibits. Spacious building but you can tell it hasn't seen any renovations for the last twenty years. Mid-tier museum shop.
