Akagi Shrine, Maebashi

Akagi Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located on the slopes of Mount Akagi in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. The shrine has served as a spiritual center for the region for over 1,600 years, with its origins traditionally dated to the 9th century. Dedicated to the mountain deity Akagi-no-Ōkami, the shrine complex consists of two main sites: the Sancho Akagi Shrine near the summit at approximately 1,300 meters elevation and the Sanchū Akagi Shrine located partway up the mountain.

The shrine holds deep cultural significance as one of the primary places of worship for Mount Akagi, one of the Three Mountains of Jōmō alongside Mount Haruna and Mount Myōgi. Mount Akagi itself is a dormant stratovolcano featuring a picturesque caldera lake called Lake Ono at its summit. The shrine near the lake offers stunning natural scenery, particularly during autumn when the surrounding forests display vibrant fall colors, and in spring when azaleas bloom across the mountainside.

Visitors to Akagi Shrine can explore the traditional shrine architecture, participate in prayer rituals, and purchase omamori amulets and ema prayer plaques. The summit shrine provides access to lakeside walking paths and panoramic views of the Kanto Plain. The area is popular for hiking, with trails connecting various points of interest around the caldera. Winter transforms the region into a snow-covered landscape, attracting visitors for its serene atmosphere and winter sports opportunities nearby.

The shrine is accessible by car via the Akagi Skyline and Akagi Panorama Line toll roads, which wind through the mountain terrain. From Maebashi Station, buses operate seasonally to the summit area, typically from spring through autumn, with the journey taking approximately 90 minutes. Private vehicles offer the most flexibility for exploration. There is no admission fee to visit the shrine grounds, though parking fees may apply at designated lots near the summit shrine.
