4.2 (841)Tourist AttractionPublic BathPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Akebono-yu is a traditional public bathhouse located in the Kannon-ura area of Asakusa that was established in 1949. Following a major renovation in 2010, the bathhouse gained widespread recognition for its distinctive wall paintings that blend traditional and contemporary Tokyo imagery. The facility represents an authentic example of sento culture, the communal bathing tradition that has been central to Japanese daily life for centuries.

The bathhouse features separate gender-divided bathing areas, each adorned with unique murals. The women's section displays a large painting of Mount Fuji with Tokyo Skytree, Senso-ji Temple's Kaminarimon gate, and the Sumida River, with a whimsical broom-riding witch in the corner. The men's bathing area features a similar composition with the addition of Godzilla peering over the mountain. These playful artistic touches distinguish Akebono-yu from more conventional bathhouses while maintaining traditional aesthetics.

Visitors can experience multiple bathing options within the facility. The main baths maintain water temperatures at 44°C, which is notably hot even by Japanese standards. A partially open-air jet bath offers a slightly lower temperature and is recommended as an initial bathing option before progressing to the hotter main bath.

The facility also includes a sauna room. Akebono-yu welcomes visitors with tattoos, distinguishing it from many traditional Japanese bathhouses that maintain strict no-tattoo policies. Basic toiletries including shampoo and body soap are provided, though visitors may bring their own. Towels can be purchased on-site for a small additional fee.

The bathhouse sits approximately 15 minutes' walk from Asakusa Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, making it easily accessible after visiting nearby attractions such as Senso-ji Temple and the Nakamise shopping street. Its position in the traditional Kannon-ura neighborhood places it away from the main tourist thoroughfares, offering visitors a glimpse into local Asakusa life.

What other travelers are saying about Akebono-yu, Taito

Great renovated old school public bath. I forget how old these ceiling were, but a lost art form for sure. Changing rooms looked to have been recently updated; so clean and tidy. Had an old school scale, that made it fun to weigh oneself. Sauna only available for Men. Loved the scented super hot bath; deep and relaxing.

A must visit spot if you live around Asakusa, especially since tattoos are welcome. For foreigners who’ve experienced rejection because of their tattoos, this place feels like a sanctuary. Highly recommended.

small sento with a few small pools — comfortable and value for money. They have a small room that uses the cold air from outside which is nice!! bring your own towel if not you can rent one :)

My least favorite sento in tokyo. For ¥550 there is only 2 baths, no cold bath at all. Also there was hair everywhere. More so than any place I've ever been too. They had free bodywash and shampoo though.
