What other travelers are saying about Akechidaira Observation Area
The Akechidaira Ropeway is located on the way to Lake Chuzenji, so if you plan to visit both the lake and the ropeway, it’s best to go to the ropeway first. If you visit the lake first, you’ll end up passing the same road again to reach the ropeway, and then repeat the route once more on your way back—basically traveling the same road twice.
The ropeway takes you to a high viewpoint where you can enjoy mesmerizing scenery. During certain seasons, the view becomes even more beautiful, making it totally worth the ride.
Another tip: Parking is free if you take the ropeway. If you don’t ride it, then parking becomes chargeable.

Overall great experience !
Visited 23 October 2025: Beautiful view, but we waited over an hour in line to get up there for such a small viewing platform, I think we stayed only 10 minutes before coming back down. Maybe not worth it? Would rather have spent the time at Kegon Falls or Chuzenjiko.
The view from here is awesome. There were already some autumn colours but I think we are about a week early. Itnis worth a stop here and taking the cable car up to the top.
Upon completed the visit to the ancient temples in Nikko, you can spend a couple of hours to move to akechidaira ropeway by bus (half an hour), you will have nice view of the falls once on the top (short trip). Dragonfly will welcome you.
