Amanoiwato Shrine Nishi Hongu, Takachiho

Amanoiwato Shrine Nishi Hongu sits in Takachiho town, Miyazaki Prefecture, and enshrines the sacred cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami is said to have hidden herself according to Japanese mythology recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. The shrine complex consists of two main structures, Nishi Hongu and Higashi Hongu, positioned on opposite sides of the Iwato River, both dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami. The Nishi Hongu specifically honors Amaterasu in her childhood form, known as Ohirume no Mikoto, with the sacred Amanoiwato cave itself serving as the primary object of worship.

The mythological significance centers on the legend where Amaterasu became angered by the violent behavior of her younger brother Susanoo no Mikoto and withdrew into the cave, plunging both earth and heaven into darkness. The gods gathered at a nearby riverbank location to devise strategies for luring her out of hiding. This narrative forms one of the most important episodes in Shinto mythology and Japanese cultural heritage.

Visitors cannot directly approach the cave, but an observation deck behind the main shrine building offers views across the river. To access this vantage point, inquire at the shrine office between 8:30 and 16:30, and a priest will provide a guided tour lasting approximately 20 minutes. These guided visits are generally free, though donations to the shrine's building fund are welcomed. The shrine also features Amanoiwato Kagura performances, registered as an important intangible cultural heritage, with the notable Amanoiwato Yokagura 33-ban Daikokaisai held annually on November 3rd, featuring 16 hours of continuous dance.

Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Nishi Hongu lies Amanoyasukawara, a large cave where the gods supposedly gathered for their divine council. The path leading to this site is lined with thousands of small stone piles stacked by visitors marking their pilgrimage to this spiritual power spot. The path can be slippery and challenging, so proper footwear is essential, and there are no exterior lights for evening visits. The shrine is located 8 kilometers from central Takachiho along National Highway 7. From Takachiho Bus Center, buses depart approximately every two hours, taking 15 minutes and costing ¥300 one way. Taxis from the center cost around ¥2,500. Admission to the shrine grounds is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, visitors cannot directly approach the cave, but the Western main shrine features a worship hall where you can view the sacred cave with guidance from shrine priests. The shrine office is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and you should inquire there to arrange a guided viewing. These guided visits to view the sacred Amanoiwato cave are generally free, though donations to the shrine's building fund or offerings are welcomed.

Amanoyasukawara is a large cave about ten minutes on foot from Amanoiwato Shrine where the gods and goddesses are said to have met to discuss their strategy for luring Amaterasu out of hiding. After following the road for a few meters, a path leads down to and along the river to reach the cave. The path can be slippery and difficult, so safe footwear is essential. Visitors follow the local tradition of stacking stones while praying to make their wishes come true.

Admission to the shrine grounds is free. Guided visits to the worship hall to view the sacred cave are also generally free, but donations to the shrine's building fund or offerings are always welcome. Wheelchairs are available for rental at no charge, with three units available by inquiring at the Nishi Hongu Shrine Office or with the security guard at the first parking lot.

Yes, goshuin are available at the Nishi Hongu conferment office, where you can receive stamps for Amanoiwato Shrine, Amanoyasukawara Shrine, and four concurrent shrines. If you forget your goshuin notebook, they have stamps available on paper, and there are four types of special goshuin books designed for Amanoiwato Shrine that can be purchased at the conferment office.

Nishi Hongu (West Main Shrine) enshrines the Amanoiwato cave itself as a sacred object and offers regular tours to view it, while Higashi Hongu (East Main Shrine) stands on the opposite bank of the Iwato River and enshrines Amaterasu Omikami directly. The East Shrine is located about a 10-minute walk from the West Shrine across the river. Both shrines are dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami but serve different aspects of the mythology and worship.

Easy 100m walk from parking area. Well kept shrine which smelled really lovely. There’s water to purify / good luck ; try to get free parking which is nearby rather than paying 500 yen to park at the entrance of the shrine

I unexpectedly found this shrine, as it had not been mentioned during the tour. It was a beautiful sight, especially with the ginkgo biloba foliage on display.

Nice and short walk to the shrine. The stream and stones are very calming. It's a very peaceful and serene place. You can park at the nearby shrine carpark and take a short walk (10 to 15 mins) to this area. There are a few cafes and eateries in between with a great view overlooking the forest.
