Asahiyama Zoo, Asahikawa

Asahiyama Zoo opened in 1967 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, and revolutionized modern zoo design through its innovative behavioral exhibition approach. Originally a struggling municipal zoo that nearly closed in the 1990s, it transformed under director Masao Kosuge into Japan's most visited zoo by focusing on natural animal behaviors rather than static displays. The zoo's success influenced zoos worldwide and helped establish Asahikawa as a major tourist destination in northern Japan.

The zoo's cultural significance lies in its pioneering "behavioral enrichment" philosophy, allowing visitors to observe animals acting naturally through specially designed enclosures. The penguin walk program, initiated in 1997, became internationally famous as hundreds of king penguins waddle along designated paths during winter months. This approach demonstrates Japanese innovation in animal welfare and environmental education, making the zoo a model for modern zoological practices globally.

Key attractions include the seal tunnel, where visitors walk through an underwater tube as seals swim overhead, and the polar bear enclosure featuring a massive swimming pool with underwater viewing areas. The penguin house offers both summer and winter viewing experiences, while the wolf forest and Hokkaido brown bear exhibits showcase regional wildlife. The red panda and snow leopard habitats demonstrate the zoo's commitment to species conservation through naturalistic environments.

Asahiyama Zoo is located 15 kilometers east of central Asahikawa. Regular buses run from JR Asahikawa Station to the zoo, taking approximately 40 minutes. The zoo operates from 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM during summer season and 10:30 AM to 3:15 PM in winter. Adult admission costs ¥1,000, with children ¥400. The facility closes on April 8-28 annually for maintenance.
