Asahiyama Zoo opened in 1967 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, and revolutionized modern zoo design through its innovative behavioral exhibition approach. Originally a struggling municipal zoo that nearly closed in the 1990s, it transformed under director Masao Kosuge into Japan's most visited zoo by focusing on natural animal behaviors rather than static displays. The zoo's success influenced zoos worldwide and helped establish Asahikawa as a major tourist destination in northern Japan.

The zoo's cultural significance lies in its pioneering "behavioral enrichment" philosophy, allowing visitors to observe animals acting naturally through specially designed enclosures. The penguin walk program, initiated in 1997, became internationally famous as hundreds of king penguins waddle along designated paths during winter months. This approach demonstrates Japanese innovation in animal welfare and environmental education, making the zoo a model for modern zoological practices globally.

Key attractions include the seal tunnel, where visitors walk through an underwater tube as seals swim overhead, and the polar bear enclosure featuring a massive swimming pool with underwater viewing areas. The penguin house offers both summer and winter viewing experiences, while the wolf forest and Hokkaido brown bear exhibits showcase regional wildlife. The red panda and snow leopard habitats demonstrate the zoo's commitment to species conservation through naturalistic environments.

Asahiyama Zoo is located 15 kilometers east of central Asahikawa. Regular buses run from JR Asahikawa Station to the zoo, taking approximately 40 minutes. The zoo operates from 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM during summer season and 10:30 AM to 3:15 PM in winter. Adult admission costs ¥1,000, with children ¥400. The facility closes on April 8-28 annually for maintenance.

What other travelers are saying about Asahiyama Zoo, Asahikawa

The penguin parade is worth the visit. Only 11:00 and 14:30. It's better to get there earlier to secure a spot. But because the route is quite long, so it's easy to find a spot. Also there is feeding show for the red racoons, which is also adorable. During winter time, it's colder in the afternoon, be prepared. To enter the zoo. It's better to check the open time. Some times they open a little later. So there is a line up for entrance. But it's quite fast. The hippo is worth the visit. Humongous

12 nov 2025 This zoo is very well-managed exhibition and each zones even if it’s not enormous zoo but spacious. They exhibits each animals in the closest way. I liked polar bear the most. The zoo shows me how big is it which it’s very close but safe. Seals are cute and really active. Male lion is impressive me because this is my first time to hear lion’s roar. Leopard is sitting above my head and beware of its pee. Close time is 15:30 in winter, so we cannot access to all zones. We chose to skip pet zone and monkey and walked directly and quickly to Ezo fox and Tanuki zone. Tanuki (raccoon dogs) are hiding under their nest, but the zoo is well-managed display which we can see them even they are sleeping inside. Even this zoo is not enormous but it’s very great and impressive zoo. Ticket 1000 yen is so cheap and really worth to pay.

The penguin walk was cool along with seeingna polar bear. Was extremely busy with people for the penguin walk then dropped off markedly about 1 hr after that. Was glad we took our time so the crowd really thinned out making it a better experience. Caught the 9:40 bus arrived at 10:10. Waited 20 minutes for the gate to open. Caught the return bus at 1:40. Was glad we arrived at the stop across from the zoo about 20 minutes before the bus. Was a good call as seats were limited so lots of people were standing for the ride home. Made lots of stops in the return trip but none on the outward bound trip. Was worth the visit. Bus fair 1000rt & entrance fee 1000 per person. Bought tickets at the zoo office Asahaikawa JR station. Was glad we went.

Beautiful and exotic zoo! Definitely saw animals I wouldn't have elsewhere. The animals aren't too excited as you'd imagine in zoos nowadays, but still mesmerising. Some of them had this weird back and forth pace that seemed robotic, so most likely are trained to follow a route in their enclosures for all visitors to witness

The zoo is relatively small and not too big. For people who enjoy seeing animals up close, this place might be appealing because the enclosures are quite small, so the animals are very easy to see. However, personally, I don’t really like zoos like this. The space for the animals feels extremely limited. For example, the hippo enclosure is only around 6 x 6 meters, which feels far too small for such a large animal. I’m not trying to act like an animal activist, but just imagining being in the animals’ position makes it uncomfortable. I’ve visited many zoos and aquariums, and on average, their spaces are much larger than this. The only positive side is that you can see the animals from a very, very close distance. They really should build bigger spaces for the animals. The penguin parade is cute, and there are many types of penguins in this zoo. However, the polar bear looked stressed, with patchy fur on its body, pacing back and forth nonstop 😢
