Asahigaoka Park

Asahigaoka Park is a scenic public park located in Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan, spanning approximately 11 hectares on a hillside overlooking the city. The park was established in 1976 to commemorate Obihiro's 70th anniversary as a city, transforming former forested land into a recreational space that has since become one of the region's most beloved green areas.

The park's most distinctive feature is its impressive collection of cherry blossom trees, with over 3,500 ezoyamazakura (Ezo mountain cherry trees) covering the hillside. These trees typically bloom in early to mid-May, later than most of Japan due to Hokkaido's cooler climate, creating a spectacular pink canopy that attracts thousands of visitors during the Obihiro Heisei Tsutsuji Matsuri (Obihiro Azalea Festival) held annually in late May and early June. The park also features approximately 3,600 azalea bushes that bloom in vibrant colors following the cherry blossom season.

Visitors can explore winding walking paths that lead through forested areas and open meadows, offering panoramic views of Obihiro city and the Tokachi Plain. The park includes several observation decks, a children's playground, picnic areas, and a small pond. During winter, the park transforms into a popular spot for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with maintained trails through snow-covered landscapes.

Asahigaoka Park is located approximately 3 kilometers southeast of Obihiro Station. Visitors can reach the park by taking a local bus from Obihiro Station, with services running regularly to nearby stops requiring a 5 to 10-minute walk to the park entrance. Taxis from the station take approximately 10 minutes. For those driving, free parking is available at multiple locations around the park. Admission is free year-round, making it an accessible destination for families and nature enthusiasts exploring the Tokachi region.
