Asukayama Park

Asukayama Park, located in Tokyo's Kita Ward, holds the distinction of being one of Japan's oldest public parks, established in 1873 during the Meiji era. The park's history extends even further back to 1720, when the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune, planted thousands of cherry trees here and opened the grounds to commoners. This act made Asukayama one of Tokyo's most celebrated hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spots for over three centuries, a tradition that continues today with approximately 600 cherry trees of various species.

The park sits atop a small hill and encompasses roughly seven hectares of green space, offering a rare expanse of nature within the dense urban landscape of northern Tokyo. Beyond its cherry blossoms, Asukayama serves as an important cultural site, housing three museums on its grounds: the Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Museum, dedicated to the father of modern Japanese capitalism who lived nearby; the Paper Museum, chronicling the history of papermaking in Japan; and the Kita City Asukayama Museum, which explores local history and culture.

Visitors can explore the park's walking paths, historic monuments, and seasonal flora, including hydrangeas that bloom in early summer. Families particularly appreciate the Asukayama Park Monorail, a free short funicular railway called the Asuka Park Rail that assists visitors in ascending the hill from street level. The park also features a small playground area with a vintage D51 steam locomotive and Toden streetcar that children can explore.

Access to Asukayama Park is straightforward via the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line to Oji Station, with the park entrance directly adjacent to the station's central exit. Alternatively, visitors can take the Tokyo Sakura Tram (Toden Arakawa Line) to Asukayama Station or Oji-Ekimae Station. The Namboku subway line also serves the area via Oji Station.

What other travelers are saying about Asukayama Park

A spacious park great for Cherry Blossom Viewing & Picnics. A great place to bring kids too since they have a big playground. We went on a weekend and it was really crowded. There are several museums available too which I really enjoyed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to visit is during the cherry blossom season in late March to early April when the park is covered in pink blooms. Autumn, from late November to early December, is another great time, as the park’s foliage turns vibrant red and orange. It is also a pleasant year-round destination for walks, picnics, and museum visits.

The park is easily accessible from Oji Station, served by the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, Tokyo Metro Namboku Line, and Toden Arakawa Streetcar. From the station, it’s just a short walk to the park entrance. Visitors can also take the free Asukayama Monorail, a small cable car, to reach the top of the hill where the park is located.

No, Asukayama Park is free to enter. The museums inside the park, including the Asukayama Museum, Paper Museum, and Shibusawa Memorial Museum, have separate admission fees, but they are relatively inexpensive.

The park is busiest during cherry blossom season and on weekends, especially in spring and autumn. On weekdays, it is much quieter, making it ideal for a peaceful walk or a relaxing break from the city’s hustle and bustle.

It's probably lovely here during hanami. I visited (both by choice and chance, when I randomly got on the Toden-Arakawa tram line) during the end of spring. Flowers have pretty much fallen from the trees but I loved having a walk around. It was a pleasant place to have a breather and there were a lot of people out for some morning exercise. The free mini monorail was nice.

The park is not very big but nice. It contains three museums (of which the Paper Museum is the most interesting one),=an open-air stage (I attained an amateur show of very enthusiastic aged people and schoolgirls (from a junior school), very lively!); here is a kids' playground with a climbing hill/slide, and exhibits of an old streetcar s a steam locomotive which kids can climb. Of course there are toilets. Also, the park boasts fountains – and very likely THE shortest funicular monorail in the world (free)! Not a must-see bur definitely worth visiting if you're around.
