Asuwa River Cherry Blossom Row, Fukui

The city of Fukui endured severe devastation from World War II air raids in 1945 and the catastrophic Fukui earthquake in 1948. In 1953, the Fukui Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Fukui City Tourism Association planted cherry blossom seedlings along the Asuwa River embankment as part of the city's reconstruction efforts. The cherry trees were initially planted in 1952 to coincide with an exposition held to promote Fukui's reconstruction. Today, this riverside pathway has become one of Japan's most celebrated cherry blossom destinations.

Approximately 600 cherry blossom trees line the embankment along a 2.2-kilometer stretch between Kidabashi Bridge and Shinakari Bridge. The site has been designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, and while other locations may have more trees or longer distances, the mature age and impressive size of the trees here give Asuwa River the distinction of being the largest scale cherry blossom display in Japan. The primary variety is Somei Yoshino, with large trees creating a pink tunnel effect around Kagetsu Bridge when in full bloom.

Visitors can walk beneath the canopy of blossoms for approximately 25 minutes along the continuous pathway. The trees are illuminated at night during the annual Fukui Cherry Blossom Festival, which began in 1955. A citizen participation event features handmade paper lanterns created by local elementary and junior high school students. Numerous street food stalls line the riverside during the festival, offering traditional Japanese treats such as takoyaki, yakisoba, and candied fruits. The atmospheric Hama-machi district nearby served as an important location on the Kitamaebune shipping route that prospered from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period.

The cherry blossom area is located approximately 20 minutes on foot from Fukui Station, with the walk along the river itself offering scenic views. Fukui Station can be reached by express train from Shin-Osaka Station in about 1 hour and 50 minutes, and the station is now served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension completed in 2024, providing easy access from Kanazawa and other major cities. Temporary parking areas are available during the festival period, though walking from the station is recommended due to expected congestion. There is no admission fee to view the cherry blossoms.
