Banna Park

4.3 (1492)ParkTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Banna Park is a 240-hectare botanical garden and observation park located in the northern hills of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture. Established in 1989, the park was developed to showcase the rich subtropical flora of the Yaeyama Islands while providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Its name derives from the Banna-dake mountain range where it sits, approximately 230 meters above sea level.

The park preserves native Okinawan forest ecosystems and serves as both a conservation area and recreational space. Visitors can explore several distinct zones featuring walking trails through dense subtropical vegetation, including indigenous species such as Ryukyu pines, tree ferns, and various orchids. The park's elevated position offers sweeping views across Ishigaki City, the East China Sea, and on clear days, the neighboring islands of Taketomi and Iriomote.

Primary attractions include multiple observation towers strategically positioned throughout the grounds, with the Embra observation deck being the most popular vantage point. The park features an insect museum displaying local butterfly and beetle species, children's play areas, and well-maintained walking courses ranging from easy 20-minute loops to more extensive 90-minute treks. The Seseragi subtropic botanical garden section showcases organized collections of tropical plants in a landscaped setting.

Banna Park is located approximately 6 kilometers north of Ishigaki Airport and 8 kilometers from the city center. Visitors can reach the park by rental car in about 15 minutes from downtown, though public bus service is limited and infrequent. Taxis are available from central Ishigaki for around ¥2,000-2,500. Admission to the park is free, and ample parking is available at multiple access points throughout the grounds.

What other travelers are saying about Banna Park

Loved Banna Park! The walk around the grounds was perfect on a day with light drizzle. The insect museum was awesome and the staff were so friendly and helpful even though I don’t speak any Japanese. We had a great time. The staff member at the counter informed us of a craft fair going on and I got some amazing nature themed souvenirs.

Banna Park It is the natural beauty of Ishigaki Island and has a vast expanse of vistas, there are many spots where we can enjoy and observe nature on a large area that makes use of the mountains as it is It was difficult to walk thoroughly because it was so wide Banna Park is located on a mountain foothills in Ishigaki. Ishigaki is the second largest island of the Yeayama Islands in Okinawa. With up to 160 islands Banna Park is divided into 5 zones: 1. Natural Forest Views: Paths, bridges, and stairs allow us to walk through Banna Parks' breathtaking nature, only on paved paths. Because if we walk off the path, there is a right to encounter a poisonous wild animal. 2. Passeo Forest, a grassy area where one can observe large butterflies. There are many in this park. In fact, we don't have to walk far to that area but at the entrance. We found a butterfly as big as a palm. And many wild birds 3.The horizon leads us to walk around the summit with a number of landmarks including the Oval Bird Observatory. 4. The Stone Monument Forest: The area surrounding Banna Park, where many stone monuments are on display. 5. Children's Square: The area of Banna Park includes the BMX track and adventure playground surrounded by the beautiful nature of Okinawa. Today we will head to Observation of Nature Forest, part of Banna Park to see the unique nature of Okinawa. Let's go! Here you can see a national park that does not have to pay entrance fees.
