Biwako Hakodateyama Ski Resort sits at 690 meters above sea level in the mountainous region northwest of JR Omi-Imazu Station in Shiga Prefecture. The resort has been operating since 1962 and is well known throughout the Kansai region for its quality snowfall and accessible location. The facility was renewed and reopened in 2020 as part of broader improvements to the mountain's year-round offerings.

The resort's primary natural feature is its commanding view of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake, which provides a distinctive backdrop for winter sports. The ski area spans elevations from 552 to 691 meters, offering 3 kilometers of slopes serviced by 8 lifts including a gondola system. The resort uses artificial snow machines to extend the season, typically opening in December and operating through late March depending on conditions. The slopes cater to all skill levels with designated beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs across the relatively compact terrain.

Visitors can experience a variety of winter activities beyond traditional skiing and snowboarding. The Play Zone is a dedicated family area featuring a snow escalator, inflatable slides including the Hako-chan Slider, and space for sledding and snow play. The resort provides full equipment rental including skis, snowboards, boots, jackets, and pants, making it accessible for first-time visitors. Private ski lessons are available with instructors, and the beginner-friendly terrain makes it particularly popular for those new to winter sports. The gondola ride itself offers panoramic views during the 8-minute ascent to the slopes.

From Osaka, the journey takes approximately 2 hours by train and bus. Take the JR train to Omi-Imazu Station on the Kosei Line, then board a local bus directly to the resort. From Kyoto, travel via Karasuma Oike to Keihan Yamashina Station, transfer to the Kosei Line, and continue to Omi-Imazu Station. Direct bus tours from Osaka and Kyoto are available through various operators. The resort provides parking for 1,100 vehicles. A 1-day lift and gondola pass costs ¥5,300 for adults, ¥4,000 for those under 18, ¥4,300 for seniors, and ¥2,700 for infants, with reduced weekday rates available. Equipment rental packages are priced separately. The KANSAI ONE PASS card offers discounted gondola lift tickets.

Nice ski resort in Shiga. Easy to access with reasonable price. The changing room is a bit tiny. Remember to have an early and late lunch to avoid long queues in the restaurant.
We visited on December 22, 2025. It was a warm Christmas, so there wasn’t much snow, but it was still great for first-timers to try sledding. The place is very family-friendly and accessible, with gondolas, minimal stairs, and accessible restrooms, making it enjoyable for elderly visitors, kids, and adults alike. It’s just a 2-hour bus ride from Umeda Station.
Bought a ticket online, unfortunately I still have to wait in the long queue to collect the actual ski pass?! This is not very smart management👎 I suggest installing ticket collection machines or simply scanning the QR code to access the lift, which would save hundreds of our precious holiday time. Dear Management, please consider this seriously. I won't come again! There are many other snow resorts with better arrangements
