Cape Hedo, Kunigami

Cape Hedo stands as the northernmost point of Okinawa's main island, where dramatic 100-meter limestone cliffs plunge into the East China Sea. Located in Kunigami Village, approximately 120 kilometers north of Naha, this remote promontory marks the geographical apex of Okinawa Prefecture and offers some of the island's most spectacular coastal scenery.

The cape holds deep cultural significance for Okinawans as a sacred site in traditional Ryukyuan spirituality. The Hedo Shrine, a small spiritual monument at the cape's edge, serves as a place of prayer where locals have historically sought protection for seafarers and given thanks for safe voyages. The site's spiritual importance reflects centuries of Okinawan maritime culture, when these waters represented both livelihood and danger for island communities.

Visitors experience Cape Hedo primarily for its raw natural beauty and the sense of standing at Okinawa's edge. The observation platform provides panoramic views across the ocean, where on clear days you can see the neighboring islands of Yoron-jima and Iheya-jima. The surrounding landscape features native subtropical forest and distinctive karst limestone formations shaped by millennia of wind and waves. The waters below attract experienced divers, though swimming is generally discouraged due to strong currents and rocky coastline.

Reaching Cape Hedo requires patience and planning. No direct public transportation serves the cape, making a rental car the most practical option for visitors. The drive from Naha takes approximately two to three hours via Route 58 heading north, transitioning to the Okinawa Expressway, then following coastal roads through rural villages. The journey itself passes through dense forest and traditional Okinawan settlements.

Limited parking is available at the cape itself. Admission is free, and the site remains accessible year-round. However, visitors should note that facilities are minimal—there are basic restrooms and a small information center, but no restaurants or shops nearby. The nearest substantial services are in Hentona, about 30 minutes south by car.
