Euglena Mall, Ishigaki

Last updated Mar 23, 2026

Euglena Mall is a covered shopping arcade located in Ishigaki City on Ishigaki Island, Japan's southernmost city in Okinawa Prefecture. The mall takes its unusual name from euglena, a microscopic organism that thrives in the island's waters and has become a symbol of local biotechnology innovation. This connection between a traditional shopping street and cutting-edge science reflects Ishigaki's unique blend of old and new.

The arcade serves as the main commercial hub of Ishigaki City, stretching approximately 330 meters through the downtown area. Originally developed as a traditional market street, it was modernized with a covered roof to protect shoppers from the intense subtropical sun and frequent rain. The mall houses roughly 100 shops and restaurants, offering everything from local Yaeyama textiles and Okinawan crafts to everyday goods and services.

Visitors can explore a diverse range of local products including awamori (Okinawan distilled spirits), minsa textiles with their distinctive five-and-four pattern representing eternal love, and various island foods like sata andagi (Okinawan doughnuts). The food offerings range from traditional Yaeyama soba restaurants to casual izakayas serving fresh island seafood. Several shops specialize in products made from or inspired by euglena, reflecting the island's research into this nutritious organism.

The mall provides a comfortable, air-conditioned environment for browsing, making it particularly appealing during midday heat. It functions as both a tourist destination and a practical shopping area for locals, giving visitors authentic insight into daily island life. The arcade's central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring other Ishigaki City attractions.

Euglena Mall is located in central Ishigaki City, approximately 15 minutes by bus or 10 minutes by taxi from Ishigaki Airport. The arcade is within walking distance of the city's ferry terminal, which serves routes to nearby islands. Most shops accept major credit cards, though some smaller establishments may be cash-only. There is no admission fee to enter the arcade, and individual shop hours vary, though most operate during standard business hours.

Traveler reviews

Not really a mall, but more like a network of shopping streets. Despite that, we really enjoyed the area—there are plenty of hidden gems if you explore beyond the main path. If you stick only to the main street, it’s mostly souvenir shops selling snacks and gifts. There’s also a food court in the middle, but I’d probably skip it and try one of the eateries outside instead.

Cute little mall street. Lots of souvenir shops and food markets. You can find Ishagaki glass and jewelry. People are very nice and there is a public restroom. Clothing and beachwear aplenty. Worth an hour or two.

It’s pretty much the kind of place you would expect. You can shop for souvenirs, and there are restaurants as well.

The mall had all kinds of souvenirs and things like bags, hats, bottles, food and much more. However the place isn't very clean, there are mosquitos and lots of dirty things.

In April of 2019, we enjoyed walking around and checking out different shops that are located in Euglena Mall. The people that worked there were very friendly and would talk to you without being pushy to buy something. That's how you can meet some of the locals and learn about them and Ishigaki island.
