Chionji Temple, Miyazu

Chionji Temple stands at the southern entrance to the famous Amanohashidate sandbar in Miyazu, Kyoto Prefecture. Founded in 808 on the order of Emperor Heizei, this Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple has served as a spiritual landmark for over twelve centuries. It is recognized as one of Japan's three major Monju temples, alongside Abe Monju-in in Nara and Kameoka Monju in Yamagata. The temple is dedicated to Monju Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, making it a popular destination for students and families praying for academic success and good fortune in examinations.

The temple's most significant structure is its two-storied pagoda, built in 1501 during the Muromachi period by Harunobu Nobunaga. This pagoda is the oldest wooden structure in Miyazu City and was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1904. The principal statue of Monju Bosatsu riding a lion is rarely displayed publicly, with viewings limited to specific dates including the first three days of the new year, January 10, and July 24. The temple grounds also feature other notable structures from the Edo period, including the main hall, front gate, and hojo.

Visitors can explore the temple's historic architecture and tranquil atmosphere while enjoying its connection to Amanohashidate, one of Japan's Three Scenic Views. Historically, travelers were ferried to the sandbar via boats launched from the temple property. The temple is also known for its resident cats and Chie-no-Mochi (Wisdom Mochi), a traditional sweet made from adzuki beans and rice that is believed to bestow wisdom upon those who eat it. These confections are sold exclusively at the four tea houses collectively known as Shiken Chaya located at the temple gate.

Chionji Temple is located approximately a five-minute walk from Amanohashidate Station on the Kitakinki Tango Railway Miyazu Line. The temple grounds are free to enter, though parking costs ¥700 per day for cars (100 spaces available) and ¥1,500 per day for buses (10 spaces). The parking operates from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on a first-come, first-served basis without reservations. For those seeking traditional temple stamps (goshuin), these are available for ¥300 or ¥500 depending on the type, with the reception closing at 4:45 PM for directly written stamps.
