Depot Island is located within Mihama's American Village in Chatan Town, Okinawa Prefecture, an area that developed around the nearby Kadena Air Base to serve U.S. military families. The complex was designed to recreate an authentic American atmosphere in Japan, featuring distinctive architecture that reflects post-war cultural exchange between Okinawa and the United States.

The cultural significance of Depot Island lies in its representation of Okinawa's unique history with American military presence. The area evolved into a bustling American-style commercial district due to the needs of U.S. military life, creating a distinctive fusion of American and Okinawan culture. This makes it a notable example of cross-cultural development in post-war Japan.

Visitors can explore over 100 stores, restaurants, bars, and a movie theater spread across candy-colored buildings. The area features more than 160 establishments including restaurants, import shops, specialty stores, cafes, and bars housed in Western-style buildings painted in pink, orange, and other bright colors. A retro Ferris wheel serves as a prominent landmark, while the oceanside boardwalk provides scenic views and dining options. The architecture and layout are designed to evoke a classic American small-town feel, making it popular for photography and leisurely strolling.

From Naha Bus Terminal, take bus number 20, 28, 29, or 120 to Mihama American Village Iriguchi stop, which takes approximately 40 minutes and costs 840 yen. By car from Naha Airport, the journey takes about 40 minutes under normal traffic conditions. Alternatively, visitors can take a bus to Kuwae bus stop and walk 5 minutes to reach the complex. Depot Island offers free admission to the general shopping and dining areas, with individual establishments setting their own prices for goods and services.

Depot Island in American Village is a vibrant and charming destination that truly captures the spirit of Okinawa! The mix of colorful buildings, stylish boutiques, cozy cafes, and international restaurants makes it a perfect spot for shopping, dining, and just strolling around. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, especially in the evening when the lights come on and the area feels magical. It’s also just steps away from the beach, so you get beautiful ocean views too. Whether you're looking for souvenirs, great food, or a fun night out, Depot Island has it all. Definitely one of the must-visit spots in Chatan!
People talk a lot about American Village which is apart of Depot Island area. We went for American Village and got distracted quickly by the beautiful views of the ocean and the colors of the buildings. There were so many cute hidden spots and little photo op areas. We spent at least 2 hours in the unbearable heat and humidity because we were so amazed. There’s a canal/river that runs perpendicular to the coast and it’s some of the clearest water I’ve ever seen. Many tourists on a Sunday so grabbing food was a bit more difficult than we anticipated. We managed to find a great Hawaiian brunch spot, Cafe 808, with reasonable prices! We spent the rest of our time walking around, window shopping, and watching the beach.
Tacky old and run down. An overpriced tourist trap for the Americans to somewhat feel at home & for other tourists to pay over the odds for less than mediocre trinkets and gifts. However, a Decent view of the sea from the boardwalk.

That was just great experience. Visible american influence, climate and style. Hawaiian vibes - cool and chill ! Nothing but walk around and spend some Yen! Although used clothing stores are pretty expensive.
