Diamond Beach, Okinawa

Diamond Beach in Onna Village, located on Okinawa's western coast, takes its name from the sparkling quality of its crystal-clear waters that shimmer like gemstones under the subtropical sun. This 250-meter stretch of white coral sand beach sits within the Onna Marine Park area, a region that became protected in the 1970s to preserve its exceptional coral reef ecosystems. The beach gained prominence as Okinawa transitioned from its post-war period into a major tourist destination, with development accelerating after Okinawa's reversion to Japan in 1972.

The beach holds natural significance as part of the larger Onna coastline ecosystem, which supports over 200 species of coral and countless tropical fish species. The surrounding waters are part of the Kuroshio Current system, which maintains warm temperatures year-round and contributes to the area's remarkable marine biodiversity. The coral reefs here represent some of the healthiest remaining reef systems in Okinawa, making the location valuable both ecologically and for marine research.

Visitors come primarily for snorkeling and swimming in the protected bay, where visibility often exceeds 20 meters and the shallow reef lies just meters from shore. The calm waters make it particularly suitable for families and beginners. Glass-bottom boat tours operate from the beach, offering views of the underwater landscape without getting wet. The beach also serves as a launching point for diving excursions to deeper reef sites offshore. Small beach facilities provide equipment rentals, including snorkeling gear, beach chairs, and umbrellas.

Diamond Beach is accessible via Route 58, Okinawa's main coastal highway, approximately 60 kilometers north of Naha Airport. The drive takes roughly 80 minutes by rental car, which remains the most practical transport option. Limited bus service operates along Route 58, with the nearest stop requiring a short walk to the beach. Parking facilities accommodate approximately 100 vehicles with fees typically around ¥500. Beach admission is free, though equipment rentals and activity fees apply separately. The beach sits adjacent to several resort hotels, making it easily accessible for guests staying in the Onna area.

What other travelers are saying about Diamond Beach, Okinawa

A beautiful beach with crystal clear water. This beach is located behind Okashigoten Onna Branch, and you can reach it by going down the stairs next to the store. I visited in September, and although it rained occasionally in the afternoon, luckily the weather was very hot when we went to this beach. We traveled by bus, but buses in Okinawa are often not on time, which forced us to cut many plans from our itinerary. I recommend renting a car for a more efficient trip and to save time.

Nice quiet beach and easy access from the road. Great place for the collection of the shells. Water was rough today so limited swimming but without a storm the water would be calm for easy swimming
This beach is absolutely amazing at high tide! In lightly cloudy days evening tide can be combined with observing one of the best sunset colors! Also nice for snorkeling, thought there are quite many nests around the shore, so meeting a male fish protecting its area is likely o happen.
Good beach to snorkel. Be careful in the evening. The tides rise almost all the way to the seawall. You can easily lose your belongings.
Great little beach! Super fun for kids with rocks to climb and plenty of soft sand to play in. The water was stunningly beautiful, and the snorkeling was nice! (Not the best, but lovely) Easy parking, access to food and treats and a nice foot-washing station. Loved this beach!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Diamond Beach has a protected bay with calm, shallow waters and a gradual sandy slope. The absence of strong currents makes it safe for children and beginners. Lifeguards patrol during peak season, and visibility is excellent for supervision.

April through October offers the best conditions, with water temperatures between 25-29 degrees Celsius. July and August have the warmest water but larger crowds and potential typhoons. May, June, September, and early October provide good weather with fewer visitors. Winter months (November-March) have cooler temperatures around 21-23 degrees Celsius and rougher seas. Rainy season occurs in May and early June.

Sea turtle sightings are uncommon at Diamond Beach compared to nearby sites like Maeda Point. The reef hosts clownfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and other tropical species easily visible while snorkeling. Glass-bottom boat tours provide reliable viewing of coral gardens and fish populations.

The beach has restrooms, outdoor showers, changing rooms, and equipment rentals. Dining is limited to basic refreshment stands. Proper restaurants are located along Route 58 within 5-10 minutes by car. Adjacent resort hotels have restaurants open to non-guests. Bringing your own food is permitted.
