East Rokko Observatory, Nishinomiya

East Rokko Observatory sits along the Royu Driveway, a scenic toll road that opened in 1962, connecting Ashiya City to the historic hot spring resort of Arima Onsen in Nishinomiya. The Royu Driveway spans approximately 10 kilometers through the eastern section of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, one of Japan's first national parks designated in 1934. The park itself covers a vast area of 900,000 hectares across eleven prefectures, representing Japan's largest national park by area.

The observatory holds significant recognition within Japan's viewing landscape. Located at an elevation of 645 meters above sea level, it has been selected for inclusion in Japan's 100 most beautiful night views, earning designation as a Night View Heritage site. The location has also gained cultural prominence through its appearance in popular Japanese television dramas, most notably serving as a filming location for scenes in "Hanzawa Naoki."

Visitors experience sweeping panoramic views spanning approximately 160 degrees to the east. The vista encompasses Osaka International Airport, Kansai International Airport, Awaji Island, Tomogashima Island, and the western Kansai region. The observation platform provides views of both the Osaka Plain and Osaka Bay, with clear sight lines extending to Kobe port to the west. The site is particularly renowned for its nighttime cityscape, where urban illumination creates what locals describe as a sea of lights. Beyond night viewing, the observatory offers equally compelling sunrise and sunset experiences throughout the year. Coin-operated binoculars are available for ¥100 per 15 minutes of viewing.

Access requires traveling via the Royu Driveway toll road, which charges ¥400 for standard-sized cars traveling between Arima IC and Hoden IC, representing approximately a ten-minute drive. For those without personal vehicles, bus services provide access to the mountain route. The observatory welcomes visitors free of charge once they reach the site via the toll road. A cafe operates at the observatory on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, offering takeout service. The facility maintains basic amenities including public restrooms and provides tourism pamphlets for visitors planning further exploration of the region.
