Nadagiku Sake Brewery, Himeji

Nadagiku Sake Brewery was established in 1910 in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. The brewery's name combines "Nada" from Harima-Nada, the sea facing Himeji, with "Kiku," Japan's national flower. Located near the famous Himeji Castle, the brewery has been producing traditional sake for over a century using locally sourced rice and water.

The brewery occupies an expansive site of approximately 8,900 square meters and features preserved original wooden buildings that showcase traditional sake-making architecture. These historic structures allow visitors to experience the authentic atmosphere of early 20th-century Japanese brewing culture. The facility represents an important part of the region's sake-making heritage, continuing centuries-old brewing traditions in the Harima area.

Visitors can explore seven sake-making rooms during guided tours available in both Japanese and English. The main production area, the Kozo brewery, is not regularly accessible to the public for hygiene reasons, but opens for premium tours on weekends during peak brewing season from January to March. These special tours are limited to just 10 visitors and require advance reservations. The brewery also offers sake tastings where guests can sample award-winning varieties, and an on-site restaurant serves dishes prepared with fermented ingredients, providing insight into how sake complements traditional Japanese cuisine.

General admission to Nadagiku Sake Brewery is free. The site is located approximately 5 minutes on foot from Tegara Station on the Sanyo Electric Railway, or about 25 minutes walking (5 minutes by taxi) from the south exit of JR Himeji Station. The brewery accepts credit card payments and provides foreign language support. While reservations are not required for individual visitors, they are necessary for group tours and the specialized premium brewery tours during brewing season.
