Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine is the head shrine for over 1,300 Sengen shrines across Japan. Established over a thousand years ago, the shrine is dedicated to Konohanasakuya-hime, the Shinto goddess associated with Mount Fuji. This deity is believed to protect against volcanic eruptions, and the shrine's purpose has historically been linked to appeasing the mountain's spirits.

The main hall, known for its striking red lacquer and ornate woodwork, was reconstructed in 1604 by Tokugawa Ieyasu. This hall is a prime example of early Edo-period architecture and has been designated an Important Cultural Property. The shrine complex is also home to Wakutama-ike, a sacred pond fed by the melted snow of Mount Fuji. This pond is renowned for its clarity and purity, and its waters are considered sacred and often used in rituals and ceremonies.

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha is a religious site and the traditional starting point for pilgrims ascending Mount Fuji. Historically, climbers would begin their journey here, seeking blessings for a safe ascent. The shrine hosts several festivals throughout the year, with the most notable being the annual Fuji Festival in May, where participants honor the mountain’s significance in Japanese culture.

Beautiful shrine. I was there on January 3rd and there was a big celebration with people from all over the world visiting and the local people joining in for the prayer, mochi making and fighting off the demons with symbolic arrows. The water directly from Fuji mountain is available here to drink and refill for free.

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine in Fujinomiya was really peaceful. I loved the bright orange color of the shrine and the whole area had a very calm vibe. The walk around the grounds was serene, with mostly locals and not too many tourists, which made it feel more authentic. There was even some kind of event going on when I visited, though I wasn’t sure what it was. It’s a cozy spot to take your time, admire the bridge, the garden, the park, and of course the shrine itself. Not a place with tons to do, but definitely worth stopping by if you’re already in the area.

A holy place to visit while in Fujinomiya. At the entrance is a large Tori gate, walking further you’ll see the temple and some people offering prayers so be mindful when taking pictures. There is also a small lake just nearby.
