Hattasan Soneiji Temple is a sacred site that dates back to the Nara period. It is part of the Shingon sect of Buddhism and holds a special place in the hearts of many who visit to seek protection from misfortune. The temple is renowned for its unique "Yakuyoke Dango," sweet rice dumplings that are believed to ward off evil. These dumplings aren’t just a snack—they’re part of a ritual. After praying, visitors eat these dumplings, believing they bring safety and luck.

The temple’s architecture reflects its ancient origins, with the main hall featuring detailed woodwork and traditional design elements. The Hondo, or main hall, is surrounded by lush greenery, adding to the serene atmosphere that envelops the entire complex. The Niomon gate, with its towering guardian statues, greets visitors as they enter, offering symbolic protection against evil spirits.

One of the key events at Hattasan Soneiji Temple is the "Hattasan Daruma Fair," held every January. Thousands flock to the temple to buy daruma dolls, which are seen as talismans of perseverance and fortune. These dolls are central to a tradition where people make a wish or set a goal, coloring in one eye upon making the wish and the other once it is fulfilled.

We went there yesterday after work for their matsuri wherein the temple was lit with many lanterns. The stairs is very high but not that tiring. I wish the fest was held on weekends. Cute omamori too! And many interesting food and the ambience on the lower part is very alive while on the top most part is very serene. The wind chimes looked cute too especially of there’s wind

I love the temple. They have unique lucky charm covers which are changing each year. The walk from the main gate to the temple inside is pretty. I would recommend to visit in autumn Cons: Pretty far from the station but you can find the taxi.
