Fukiage Beach, Hioki

Fukiage Beach stretches as a magnificent sand dune from Kaseda city to Fukiage town in Kagoshima Prefecture, forming one of Japan's three largest sand dunes. This expansive coastal formation represents a significant geological feature along Kyushu's western shoreline, characterized by its pristine sandy expanse and surrounding pine forests that have developed over centuries of natural processes.

The beach holds particular ecological importance as a designated nesting ground for sea turtles, making it a crucial habitat for marine wildlife conservation. The park features roller-skating facilities, soccer grounds, and camping areas, while providing various bicycle rental options including city bikes, cross motorcycles, and professional road bikes. Swimming is prohibited at the beach itself, but a large swimming pool operates from mid-July through the end of August.

The area's cultural calendar centers around the Fukiage Sand Festival held annually in May. This international sand sculpture competition attracts teams from around the world to create nearly 100 elaborate works ranging from 3 to 8 meters in height. The sculptures transform throughout the day as sunlight and evening illumination create shifting colors and shadows, offering visitors a unique artistic experience set against the natural sand dune backdrop.

Fukiage Beach is located in Hioki, Kagoshima Prefecture, specifically in the Fukiagecho Iriki area. The facility operates as a public park with no admission fees required for beach access or basic park use.
