Fukuyama Castle Museum

Fukuyama Castle Museum stands in the heart of Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, as one of Japan's notable reconstructed castles. Originally built in 1622 by Mizuno Katsunari, a trusted retainer of the Tokugawa shogunate, the castle served as the administrative center of the Fukuyama Domain for over 250 years. The original five-story keep was designated a National Treasure in 1931 but was destroyed during air raids in 1945. The current structure was rebuilt in 1966 using modern concrete construction, with the exterior faithfully recreating the original appearance.

The castle holds particular architectural significance as it was one of the last major castles constructed during the Edo period, built during a time when castle construction was strictly regulated. Its strategic position on Konoyama Hill allowed it to oversee the Sanyo region's important transportation routes. The complex originally featured multiple turrets and gates, some of which have been preserved or reconstructed, including the Fushimi Yagura, a relocated structure dating back to Fushimi Castle in Kyoto.

Inside the museum, visitors explore exhibits chronicling the castle's history and the Fukuyama Domain's cultural development. The collection includes samurai armor, swords, historical documents, and artifacts from the ruling Mizuno and Abe families who governed the domain. The top floor observation deck provides panoramic views across Fukuyama City and the surrounding Seto Inland Sea area. The castle grounds feature traditional gardens and the preserved Tsukimi Yagura moon-viewing turret, offering glimpses into feudal-era castle life.

Fukuyama Castle sits directly adjacent to JR Fukuyama Station on the Sanyo Shinkansen line, making it exceptionally accessible—visitors can see the castle immediately upon exiting the station's north side. From Osaka, the journey takes approximately one hour by shinkansen, while Hiroshima is just 30 minutes away. Admission to the museum costs 500 yen for adults, with reduced rates for students and children.
