Ozekiyama Park Observatory, Miyoshi

Ozekiyama Park Observatory sits atop a 202-meter high hill in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, overlooking the confluence of the Gonokawa River and the historical heart of this former castle town. The site gained prominence in 1632 when Asano Nagaharu, the first daimyo of the Asano clan in Miyoshi, established his residence on Mount Ozeki and constructed an astronomical observatory at its peak. Though the original structures no longer stand, a modern two-story observation deck now occupies the historic observatory site, offering panoramic views across Miyoshi City and the surrounding river valley.

The park holds deep cultural significance as a repository of local history and literary heritage. A prominent stone monument displays a tanka poem by Nakamura Kenkichi, one of Japan's great modern poets born in Miyoshi, which celebrates the mountain's cherry blossoms and the flowing river below. The grounds also feature the Akuri Garden with a statue of Princess Akuri (Youzenin), the third daughter of Asano Nagaharu and wife of the unfortunate lord whose death triggered the legendary tale of the 47 Ronin. Adjacent to the park, Hogenji Temple preserves weeping cherry trees planted by Oishi Kuranosuke, the famous leader of the 47 Ronin, and houses wooden statues of all forty-seven samurai warriors in its Gishi-do Hall.

The park transforms dramatically with the seasons, establishing itself as one of Miyoshi's premier natural attractions. Spring brings over 1,000 cherry trees into bloom, including 600 specimens of Somei Yoshino, Yaezakura, and Edohigan varieties, making it the venue for the annual Sakura Matsuri festival in early April. Autumn rivals spring's display when approximately 800 maple trees paint the entire mountainside in vivid reds and golds. The Seishin Pond area features evening illuminations that create a serene Japanese landscape, while walking paths wind through the hillside offering river views and encounters with historical artifacts, including a rare 17th-century Kirishitan Christian stone lantern recovered from the Gonokawa River.

Access to Ozekiyama Park Observatory is straightforward from JR Miyoshi Station. Visitors can take a local bus to the Ozekiyama-Koen bus stop, followed by a two-minute walk to the park entrance. The park maintains free admission year-round, making it an accessible destination for all visitors. The observation deck provides unobstructed views best appreciated during clear weather, while the illuminated evening scenes around Seishin Pond offer a different perspective on this historic landscape. The park serves as an ideal half-day excursion from Hiroshima City, with sufficient time to explore both the observatory and the adjacent Hogenji Temple's cultural treasures.
