Gifu Castle doesn't have the fame of Himeji, Kumamoto or Osaka Castles. In fact, most tourist itineraries never consider Gifu Prefecture at all. But that might be just the reason to go.
Gifu Castle is on an imposing mountain overlooking the city. Accessing the castle is a bit challenging for the non-ninja among us but I guess that is a reminder that castles were built, not as tourist attractions, but as fortress designed to protect the occupants.
Be that as it may, half the pleasure of Gifu Castle (or more than half, possibly) is the view from the mountaintop. Great in the daylight, even more awesome in the night.
Samurai Sinay says:
There is a cable car that makes the journey to the castle easier and faster. But....if time is of no element and you are of sound body (sound mind is optional), you can hike up to the castle. A night hike is especially exhilarating
(and exhausting 😉)
Here’s another mountaintop Japanese-style castle.
What really stands out is the 360-degree panoramic view—absolutely incredible.
To the north, you can see the Japanese Alps, including Mt. Washiba and Mt. Kasagatake. To the south, the Nōbi Plain stretches out, and you can even spot Nagoya Station.
Standing here, I can’t help but imagine how crucial this location must have been during the feudal era—perfect for controlling the surrounding regions.
In any case, it’s an amazing place to visit.
Rebuilt castle on original site.
Modern museum inside with nice displays on life of Oda Nobunaga. A tramway takes you up Mt. Kinka.
No elevator. Some difficult steps up the mountain side to get to the castle. Bring good shoes or hiking boots. Great veiws or the entire vally from the castle top, observation platform, and tramway.
There is a squirrel attraction near castle on way up.
Many hiking trails of various difficulties. Bring your camera and best lense.
Many other attractions nearby.
Closes at 530pm not alot to do after 530
It's losing its 5 ⭐ because of the museum. The museum is very, meh, to be honest. There was 2 statues and some information, all in Japanese. No pictures were allowed so I didn't use Google translate images. The castle itself was very cheap and modernised. None of those old rickety wooden stairs that feels like death each time I climb it 😂! The information was also very interesting and in English. The staff were very kind. This is well worth a visit. The view itself is astounding!!
Really cool castle but a bit of a hike to get to it though, especially on a hot sunny day. Really picturesque views from the 3rd floor, must look stunning at night. Stopping off at squirrel village is a must as well!
