Hakone Hydrangea Train

The Hakone Hydrangea Train, a dazzling journey through a floral wonderland, is an experience that transforms a simple ride into a symphony of color and nature. Every June and July, the Hakone Tozan Railway, Japan's oldest mountain railway, becomes a moving canvas as it winds through vibrant corridors of blooming hydrangeas.

As the train ascends the steep slopes of Hakone, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of thousands of hydrangeas in full bloom. These flowers, known locally as "ajisai," line the tracks with their clusters of blue, pink, and purple blossoms, creating a kaleidoscope of hues that shift with the light and the changing landscape.

Each bend in the track reveals a new tableau: delicate blossoms hugging the rugged mountainside, cascading down steep embankments, and framing the railway in an almost surreal display of natural artistry. The train’s slow, deliberate pace allows ample time to savor these scenes, with stops at strategically placed stations where visitors can step out and immerse themselves in the floral splendor.

Evenings add another layer of magic as the hydrangeas are softly illuminated, transforming the journey into a dreamy nocturnal spectacle. The play of light and shadow against the vibrant flowers creates an ethereal atmosphere, making the night rides especially enchanting.

What other travelers are saying about Hakone Hydrangea Train

At 0.48 km the slope noticeable, the view fleetingly opens—valley rims, cedar roots, mossy banks. The station feels suspended between two worlds: woods below and open ridge ahead. Tourist Tip: Best for a quick peek out the window—if you alight you’ll find narrow paths that lead toward art installations or garden corners in the forest.
