Hanegi Park

Hanegi Park is a 55,000 square meter public park located in the Daita neighborhood of Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. The park occupies the former estate of the Hanegi family, influential figures during the Edo period who served as village headmen. After World War II, the property was acquired by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and transformed into a public park that opened in 1965.

The park is most renowned for its plum grove, which features approximately 650 plum trees representing 60 different varieties. This extensive collection makes Hanegi one of Tokyo's premier plum blossom viewing destinations. The trees typically bloom from mid-February through early March, transforming the park into a sea of white and pink blossoms. During peak season, the park hosts the annual Setagaya Ume Matsuri (Plum Blossom Festival), attracting thousands of visitors who come to enjoy traditional performances, local food stalls, and the spectacular floral displays.

Beyond its famous plum grove, Hanegi Park offers a peaceful retreat with walking paths, open lawns, and recreational facilities including tennis courts and a children's playground. The park's relatively level terrain and well-maintained pathways make it accessible for visitors of all ages. In spring, cherry blossoms complement the earlier plum blooms, while summer brings lush greenery and autumn displays vibrant foliage.

The park is accessible via the Odakyu Line, with Umegaoka Station being the nearest stop, approximately a 5-minute walk away. Alternatively, visitors can use Setagaya-Daita Station on the Keio Inokashira Line, which is about 15 minutes on foot from the park. Entry to Hanegi Park is free of charge, making it an affordable option for both tourists and local residents seeking seasonal beauty and outdoor recreation in Tokyo's residential west side.
