Hattori Farm Hydrangea Mansion, Mobara

4.1 (799)GardenFarmPoint Of InterestServiceEstablishment

Hattori Farm Hydrangea Mansion represents the dedicated cultivation efforts of the Hattori family in Mobara City, Chiba Prefecture. This expansive 18,000 square meter estate showcases over 250 varieties of hydrangeas, with more than 10,000 individual plants covering the grounds. The farm operates as a working agricultural estate where the Hattori family has invested years of careful cultivation to create one of Japan's premier hydrangea viewing destinations.

The estate's unique topographical layout creates a natural color gradient, with vibrant pinks, whites, and yellows in the lower areas gradually transitioning to rich blues and violets on the hillside slopes. This carefully maintained landscape requires year-round attention from part-time workers who protect the plants from insects and prune them to ensure optimal blooming conditions. The hydrangeas represent a living collection that evolves annually, offering returning visitors new perspectives on the displays.

The Hattori family maintains the estate's authentic character by welcoming visitors as guests to their working farm rather than operating as a commercial tourist facility. During peak blooming season, the family sells locally grown produce including Chiba melons and loquats, with the highly prized Japanese "Ams" melons harvesting simultaneously with hydrangea season. The estate also offers traditional tea ceremony experiences within the family residence, providing cultural immersion alongside the floral displays.

The hydrangeas bloom for approximately one month beginning in June, creating "a sea of colorful flowers" across the mountainous terrain. The estate opens exclusively during hydrangea season, emphasizing the seasonal nature of this specialized attraction. Visitors can explore winding paths that traverse the 18,000 square meter grounds, experiencing panoramic views of the hydrangea displays from multiple vantage points.

The farm is located at 719 Sangaya, Mobara City and sits approximately 10 minutes by car from JR Mobara Station on the Sotobo Line. JR Mobara Station is accessible in approximately 1.5 hours from Tokyo Station, with taxi service from the station costing around 1,500 yen one-way. Limited bus service operates from the station toward the farm. The estate maintains affordable admission fees, supported by local produce sales, with contact available at +81-475-24-8511.

I came here at June 18th and many kinds of hydrangeas were blooming. It became crowded at about 9h30. The ground was a little steep and slippery so remember to wear soft-soled shoes. I think the hydrangeas would be more beautiful in rainy or cloudy days.

We went in June to see the hydrangea flowers. It was a magical world of hydrangeas in the middle of nowhere, far from all distractions. The variety of flowers was amazing. A must visit place if you are a hydrangea fan.
