Himenuma (Hime Pond)

4.2 (225)Scenic SpotPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Himenuma, also known as Hime Pond, is an artificial pond located on Rishiri Island in northern Hokkaido, part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. Situated at the northern base of Mount Rishiri, this tranquil pond is surrounded by pristine primeval forest and serves as an important sanctuary for rare and endangered bird species. The pond was created to enhance the natural landscape and has become one of the island's most photographed locations.

The pond's primary attraction is its mirror-like reflection of Mount Rishiri, the 1,721-meter dormant volcano that dominates the island's center. This mountain, often called Rishiri-Fuji due to its resemblance to Mount Fuji, appears dramatically in the pond's still waters on clear days, creating the famous "upside-down mountain" view that draws photographers and nature enthusiasts. The reflection is particularly stunning in early morning when conditions are calmest, and during early summer when snow still caps the mountain's peak.

Visitors can walk the complete circuit of Himenuma via a well-maintained wooden boardwalk approximately one kilometer in circumference. This elevated pathway takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace and allows close access to the surrounding flora without disturbing the delicate ecosystem. The boardwalk winds through dense forest where alpine plants such as light purple violets, white cedar, and various subalpine flowers bloom from late spring through summer. Birdwatchers frequently spot species including the black woodpecker and hear the dawn chorus of forest birds. The pond is closed from early November to late April due to winter conditions.

The pond is located approximately five kilometers from Oshidomari Port, the main ferry terminal on Rishiri Island. Visitors arriving by local bus should take the Soya Bus from Oshidomari Port, which runs every 2-3 hours during summer, and alight at Himenuma Iriguchi bus stop (approximately 5 minutes, ¥310). From the bus stop, it is a 20-minute uphill walk covering roughly two kilometers to reach the pond entrance. Many visitors opt for organized bus tours that include Himenuma as a stop, with tours typically allowing 20-30 minutes at the site. Those with rental cars will find a dedicated parking area at the entrance. A small gift shop near the pond sells local photography, woodwork, and refreshments.

What other travelers are saying about Himenuma (Hime Pond)

On 18 Sept 2025, my wife and I drove here. In 20 minutes, we walked around the pond once. The circumstances were such that we couldn’t take any scenic photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Early morning offers the best conditions for viewing the mountain's reflection, when winds are typically calm and the water surface is most still. The reflection is particularly dramatic in early summer (June-July) when snow still covers Mount Rishiri's peak. Avoid windy days or afternoons when breezes disturb the water's surface.

The complete circuit along the wooden boardwalk is approximately one kilometer and takes 20 to 30 minutes at a leisurely pace. Photographers and birdwatchers often spend longer, sometimes up to an hour, to capture the scenery and observe wildlife.

No, the pond is closed from early November to late April due to winter conditions. Heavy snow makes the boardwalk inaccessible and potentially dangerous. Plan your visit between late April and early November for the best experience.

A car is not essential but convenient. Local Soya Bus service runs from Oshidomari Port with buses every 2-3 hours during summer (¥310, 5 minutes to Himenuma Iriguchi stop), followed by a 20-minute uphill walk. Organized bus tours, rental cars, or taxis are alternative options. Bringing a rental car on the ferry from Wakkanai is expensive, so consider renting directly on the island.

Admission to Himenuma is completely free. However, visitors should budget for transportation costs to reach Rishiri Island and local bus fares or vehicle rental on the island itself.

A pretty, photogenic spot when there's still snow on Mt Rishiri. Come on less windy days to see the reflection in the pond (pics were taken in mid June). Free entrance with plenty of parking spaces. One can take a short walk around the whole pond.

The Himenum Swamp is a nice stop after traveling for a couple of hours. You have a chance to stretch your legs while taking in some of the local scenery.
