Hinode Park, Kamifurano

4.3 (1831)ParkTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Hinode Park in Kamifurano, located in central Hokkaido, is a hillside park renowned for its spectacular lavender fields and panoramic views of the Tokachi mountain range. Established in the 1970s, the park covers approximately 11 hectares and sits at an elevation that provides sweeping vistas across the Furano Basin, making it one of the region's premier flower-viewing destinations.

The park's primary significance lies in its role in Hokkaido's lavender cultivation heritage. Kamifurano became a major lavender-growing area during the late 20th century when the region shifted from traditional agriculture to flower farming as a tourist attraction. Hinode Park was developed as part of this transformation, capitalizing on the area's cool climate and well-drained volcanic soil, which proved ideal for lavender cultivation. The park now serves as both a working farm and a public attraction, maintaining Furano's reputation as Japan's lavender capital.

Visitors come primarily between mid-July and early August when the lavender reaches peak bloom, creating dramatic purple slopes against the backdrop of mountains. The park features multiple flower varieties beyond lavender, including salvias, sunflowers, and cosmos that bloom in seasonal succession from spring through autumn. A traditional Dutch windmill stands as a photographic landmark, and walking paths wind through the terraced gardens, allowing close-up views of the flowers. The elevated position means clear days offer views extending to Mount Tokachi and the surrounding peaks.

Hinode Park is located approximately 3 kilometers from JR Kamifurano Station. The most practical access is by car, with free parking available on-site for about 40 vehicles. During peak lavender season, rental bicycles from Kamifurano Station provide an alternative, though the uphill ride takes roughly 20 minutes. Taxi services from the station cost around ¥1,500 each way. Admission to the park is free, though there is a small charge for entering certain flower fields during harvest season when visitors can purchase cut flowers directly.

What other travelers are saying about Hinode Park, Kamifurano

Very nice hilly park. However when I went in end of September, most of the flowers were not there anymore. The top of the observatory was nice however. Nice bonus view in the washrooms!

In July, we were at another lavender field in the late afternoon but the evening sun had cast its shadows across the field and the colours were darkened in the shadows. So, we drove to Hinode Park, having first checked on the Internet that the hill slope would be illuminated by the setting sun. We drove up to the hilltop at Hinode Park. Indeed, we were delighted that the setting sun lit up the lavender fields on the hill slope. It wasn't crowded in the evening. There were a few wedding couples having their photos taken amongst the lavender fields.

It's free and it's absolutely beautiful, especially if you come in the peak of summer when all the lavenders are in bloom. It's a lovely colourful garden with a scenic spot for romantic photos. Other times of the year, it's much quieter and less photogenic, but still nice.

Beautiful park with lavender fields over looking the northern part of Furano. Less tourists here which was welcome. So many couples taking marriage photos here, just as a testament to how beautiful this place is. Butterflies flying all around. A cafe up top. Ample parking. Toilets present. Vending machines to quench your thirst. Strongly recommended! You can even ring the bell in the middle and have a picture perfect frame of the lavender fields behind.

I finally visited Hinode Park last week, having seen stunning photos of its lavender fields. Unfortunately, the gloomy weather made it feel more spacious than vibrant. 😅😅😅 Unlike Tomita Farm which still has flowers in early September, Hinode Park is quite low maintenance and lacked blooms during my visit. I’m definitely planning to return in June or July for the blooming season! A quick note to those visitors with elders and young children: it takes about 15 minutes to walk from the car park to the peak which has steps but well paved.
