What other travelers are saying about Hozugawa River Boat Ride
The entire boat trip takes about two hours and is not thrilling at all—it’s mainly about enjoying the scenery, making it suitable for all ages. Those looking for excitement may find it less appealing.
Spring and autumn are likely the most comfortable seasons, and in autumn, the mountains covered in red maple leaves should be especially beautiful. In summer, it can get quite hot, so sun protection is recommended.
Overall, it’s a wonderful journey that allows you to fully appreciate the beautiful landscapes. Throughout the trip, the boatmen are very friendly and engaging, helping to create a pleasant atmosphere and making it a truly enjoyable experience.
Nice boat ride down the river to arashiyama. 3 boatman taking turns to steer and power the boat, they try to make the boat ride fun with jokes.
The ride is a bit long, but the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. Ensure to wear clothes that are a water resistant as you will get splashed depending on the tide level and the weather that day.
The Hozugawa River Boat Ride (Hozugawa Kudari) 保津川下り offers a very enjoyable way to experience the beautiful scenery of Kyoto. The moment the boat starts moving along the river, you’re surrounded by peaceful nature and impressive views on both sides.
During autumn, the red leaves along the riverbanks make the scenery even more stunning, with different shades of red and orange reflecting on the water. It feels calm, refreshing, and a wonderful way to see the seasonal colors up close while relaxing on the boat.
The ride is smooth and pleasant, and the quiet sound of the river creates a very relaxing atmosphere. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy the beauty of nature in Kyoto, especially if you love autumn leaves and peaceful landscapes. I really enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area. 🛶🍁
An enjoyable way to experience the mountainside of Kyoto. About a 2 hour boat tour with some of the funniest, entertaining tour guides. They do switch between each other to stir and control the ore from the front and back of the boat. Watch them tip toe across the skits of the boats throughout the ride. You get to go under the romantic train bridge, if lucky get to see it travelling by. People will wave at you from the train.
I found it neat that there is sea market boats waiting to provide snacks.
I would recommend doing this activity as part of your itinerary, if you like to get a glimpse of the scenery and away from the hustle and bustle of Kyoto.
I took the boat ride right after my Sagano Train ride ended. From the Kameoka station there will be a specific bus that will take you to the Hozugawa River Boat ride point of embark. The bus accepts Icoca card so its very convenient. I bought the ticket for the voat ride online, so you can just scan the QR code at the boat ride office and they will issue you with physical ticket. The staff will assign you to a certain boat and you have to queue at certain point depending on your boat number. The ride took almost two hours, but I really enjoy it, seeing the picturesque view of the mountain from the river which you cant get if you just took the Sagano Romantic train. Almost at the end of the boat ride there will be a boat selling food and drinks. It was a very great experience. I love this more than the Sagano train ride. I love that the boatsmen were funny too and they crack jokes here and there, even though there are some language barrier.
