Hozugawa River Boat Ride

The Hozugawa River Boat Ride is a 16-kilometer scenic journey down the Hozu River from Kameoka to Arashiyama in Kyoto Prefecture. This traditional boat experience has operated for over 400 years, originally serving as a vital transportation route for moving timber and goods from the mountains to Kyoto during the Edo period. The commercial passenger service began in 1895, transforming the historic cargo route into one of Japan's most celebrated river attractions.

The journey showcases the natural beauty of the Hozu River Gorge, where the waterway cuts through forested mountains and dramatic rock formations. Passengers experience changing seasonal landscapes, from cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant greenery in summer to fiery autumn colors and occasional snow-dusted scenery in winter. The two-hour descent is guided by skilled boatmen who navigate the river using traditional bamboo poles and oars, demonstrating techniques passed down through generations. The boats pass through both calm stretches and mild rapids, offering moments of tranquility alongside brief bursts of excitement.

During the ride, visitors observe wildlife including herons and cormorants along the riverbanks, while the boatmen often provide commentary about the surrounding landscape and local history. The boats themselves are flat-bottomed wooden vessels that accommodate approximately 20 to 30 passengers, maintaining an authentic connection to the waterway's historical use. The experience concludes in the Arashiyama district, a popular tourist area known for its bamboo groves and temples.

To reach the departure point at Kameoka, travelers typically take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Kameoka Station, a journey of approximately 20 minutes. From Kameoka Station, a connecting bus or taxi covers the short distance to the boat boarding area. Alternatively, many visitors combine the boat ride with the Sagano Scenic Railway, taking the picturesque train from Arashiyama to Kameoka and returning via boat.

Traveler reviews

Best 2 hours of my life, super relaxing boat ride although my bum and back started to feel sore towards the end. It was an amazing experience travelling back to Arashiyama on the Hozugawa River Boat Ride. The sky was clear, boatmen were friendly, talked and joked with everyone along the way back. This activity is suitable for all ages, you might get a few splashes of water during rapids but it’s not as bumpy as it looks. Awesome experience to enjoy the scenery and learn a few fun facts about the river. The boatman explained the cherry blossoms were planted by one of the boatmen many years ago, so now many people can enjoy them while travelling down the river.

I took the boat ride right after my Sagano Train ride ended. From the Kameoka station there will be a specific bus that will take you to the Hozugawa River Boat ride point of embark. The bus accepts Icoca card so its very convenient. I bought the ticket for the voat ride online, so you can just scan the QR code at the boat ride office and they will issue you with physical ticket. The staff will assign you to a certain boat and you have to queue at certain point depending on your boat number. The ride took almost two hours, but I really enjoy it, seeing the picturesque view of the mountain from the river which you cant get if you just took the Sagano Romantic train. Almost at the end of the boat ride there will be a boat selling food and drinks. It was a very great experience. I love this more than the Sagano train ride. I love that the boatsmen were funny too and they crack jokes here and there, even though there are some language barrier.

Our ride in winter begun at 10:00 am and ended 11:48 am. The ride offers spectacular scenic views. But some may be bored with the length of the ride. The scenery is may also seem repetitive after a while. But I personally love every second of it. The boatmen, 3 of them, tried their best to entertain us along the way, cracking jokes, showing us whatever we can see. “Look over there, the stone is shaped like an elephant!” They are rowing with all their might, while talking and cracking jokes. I really can’t complain. They also speak good English, and maybe Chinese (?). Overall, if you are into breathtaking nature, definitely go to the boatride! It ends near the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the Togetsukyo Bridge, another treat for nature-lovers.

Great experience. I visited Kyoto several times, but this was the first time I tried this adventure with my familty. The boat staff were fantastic—they kept sharing interesting information throughout the journey and added a lot of humor, which made the ride even more enjoyable. Safety was well taken care of. Life jackets were provided, and even my 7-year-old child could join comfortably without any concerns. The scenery along the river is absolutely stunning. I can only imagine how beautiful it would be during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage, or even in winter with snow. There were also a few exciting moments when passing through rapids, but the boatmen were highly skilled and handled everything smoothly, so it still felt safe. Definitely something I would love to do again!

The Hozugawa River Boat Ride was an unforgettable experience! The scenery along the river is absolutely beautiful, especially with the mountains and seasonal views. It’s very relaxing but also a bit exciting when passing through small rapids. The boatmen are skilled and even add some fun with their commentary, making the ride more enjoyable. Overall, it’s a great way to experience nature in Kyoto and something I highly recommend trying at least once!
