Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Kobe

The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art stands as one of western Japan's premier contemporary art institutions, located in the waterfront district of Nada Ward in Kobe. Designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando and opened in 2002, the museum replaced its predecessor from 1970 and represents a significant architectural achievement with its signature exposed concrete aesthetic and geometric forms that interact dramatically with natural light and water features.

The museum houses an impressive permanent collection of over 9,000 works, with particular strength in contemporary Japanese and international art from the post-war period onward. Notable holdings include works by Henry Moore, whose sculptures are prominently displayed both inside and throughout the outdoor spaces, as well as significant pieces by Japanese artists including those connected to Hyogo Prefecture. The collection spans paintings, sculptures, prints, and contemporary installations, reflecting the museum's commitment to modern artistic expression.

Visitors experience art across three floors of exhibition space totaling approximately 27,400 square meters. The ground floor features special exhibitions that rotate throughout the year, while the upper floors house permanent collection galleries arranged thematically and chronologically. The building itself is considered part of the artistic experience, with Ando's architectural vision creating contemplative spaces where concrete, water, and light converge. The outdoor sculpture garden provides a relaxing environment to appreciate large-scale works against views of Osaka Bay.

The museum is accessible via the Hanshin Railway, with Iwaya Station being the nearest stop, requiring approximately a 10-minute walk south toward the waterfront. Alternatively, visitors can take the JR Kobe Line to Nada Station and walk about 15 minutes. Several city buses also serve the area. Admission to the permanent collection costs 510 yen for adults, with reduced rates for seniors and university students, while high school students and younger enter free. Special exhibition fees vary depending on the content and typically require a separate ticket.
