Ibaraki Nature Museum Park

The Ibaraki Nature Museum Park, located in Bandō City in southwestern Ibaraki Prefecture, spans approximately 26 hectares and serves as both a natural history museum and an outdoor recreational space. Established in 1994, the facility was developed to showcase the region's diverse ecosystems and geological heritage while providing educational opportunities about the natural environment of the Kantō Plain.

The park's significance lies in its comprehensive presentation of Ibaraki's natural history, featuring extensive collections of fossils, minerals, and specimens that document the area's evolution over millions of years. The indoor museum houses over 100,000 specimens, including rare fossils from the ancient Paleo-Tokyo Bay that once covered parts of the region. The outdoor grounds preserve native wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands that represent the ecosystems historically present in the area before modern development.

Visitors can explore multiple themed exhibition halls inside the museum that cover topics ranging from prehistoric life to contemporary biodiversity. The outdoor area features nature trails, observation decks, and recreated habitats where guests can observe seasonal plant life and local wildlife. The park is particularly popular during spring for cherry blossoms and autumn for foliage. Educational programs include guided nature walks, hands-on fossil excavation experiences, and workshops on environmental conservation.

The park is accessible via the Tsukuba Express line to Moriya Station, followed by a 30-minute bus ride to the museum entrance. Alternatively, visitors can take the JR Joban Line to Toride Station with a connecting bus service. By car, the facility is approximately 50 kilometers from central Tokyo via the Jōban Expressway, with free parking available on-site. General admission costs ¥540 for adults and ¥100 for children and students, with discounts available for groups of 20 or more.
