Iizaka Onsen Station serves as the gateway to one of Japan's most historic hot spring towns, with over 1,000 years of bathing heritage. The station opened on March 23, 1927 and underwent a major renovation in 2010, with the new design unveiled on December 20, 2010. Located 9.2 km from Fukushima Station, it marks the terminus of the Fukushima Kōtsū Iizaka Line and provides direct access to Iizaka Onsen, an ancient spa resort that has welcomed notable visitors throughout history including famous Edo period poet Matsuo Bashō in 1689.

The hot spring area itself holds legendary significance. According to legend, Yamato Takeru, prince of the imperial house and son of the 12th Emperor Keikō, visited the area in the 2nd century and was cured of his sickness after bathing in the hot springs. The resort earned recognition through the traditional Japanese saying "Beppu in the West; Iizaka in the East", which references the country's finest onsen destinations. The town features over 40 traditional ryokan and 9 public baths, including Sabakoyu, one of Japan's oldest wooden public bathhouses.

Visitors can explore the atmospheric streets lined with 9 high-rise ryokan along the Surikami River, soak in communal baths and public foot baths scattered throughout town, and experience the mildly alkaline spring waters that reach temperatures around 42°C. The historic Former Horikiri Residence offers glimpses into Edo period architecture, while the 52-meter Totsuna Bridge serves as a landmark structure. Local specialties include Enban Gyoza and soft-boiled Onsen Tamago eggs. The area also hosts the Iizaka Fighting Festival each October.

The station building contains practical amenities on its ground floor, including a FamilyMart convenience store, a vegetable shop, and an ATM, while the basement level houses the ticket gates, platforms, waiting room, and toilets. Bicycle rentals are available from Iizaka Onsen Station to facilitate exploration of the surrounding area.

Transportation to Iizaka Onsen Station requires taking the private Fukushima Kōtsū Iizaka Line from JR Fukushima Station. The journey takes approximately 23 minutes with trains running roughly every 15-30 minutes depending on the time of day. The one-way adult fare is 370 yen and children's fare is 190 yen. Note that JR Rail Passes cannot be used on this private line. Day passes and discount coupons are available at the Fukushima Kōtsū ticket office. From Tokyo, travelers can reach Fukushima Station via the Tohoku Shinkansen in approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, making Iizaka Onsen easily accessible for a day trip or longer stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, JR Rail Passes cannot be used on the Fukushima Kōtsū Iizaka Line, as it is a privately operated railway line rather than a JR line. You must purchase a separate ticket, with the one-way adult fare from Fukushima Station to Iizaka Onsen Station costing 370 yen. The ticket must be purchased at the station using cash, as IC cards like Suica or Pasmo are not accepted. However, one-day and two-day passes are available at the Fukushima Kōtsū ticket office if you plan multiple trips.

The journey takes approximately 20 minutes on the Fukushima Kōtsū Iizaka Line. Trains run regularly throughout the day, typically every 15 to 30 minutes depending on the time. The line covers a total distance of 9.2 kilometers between the two stations. Note that you need to access the Iizaka Line from a separate entrance on the northeast side of Fukushima Station, not from the main JR station building.

The ground-level floor contains a FamilyMart convenience store, a small vegetable shop, and a Fukushima Shinkin Bank ATM. The basement level houses the ticket gate and platforms, the station office, waiting room, and toilets. Bicycle rentals are available from the station to help you explore the onsen town and surrounding areas. The Iizaka Onsen Tourism Association office is located directly across from the station plaza, where you can obtain brochures, walking maps, and tourist information.

Yes, soap and shampoo are not provided at public bathhouses like Sabakoyu, so bathers should bring their own. You should also bring your own towel. Guests purchase tickets from vending machines inside the entrance before bathing. The public bathhouses are genuine communal facilities used by locals in their daily lives, so following proper onsen etiquette is important. Be aware that the water in Sabakoyu can reach temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius, making it notoriously hot even by Japanese standards.

From Tokyo Station, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Fukushima Station, which takes approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on the train service. Once at Fukushima Station, transfer to the Fukushima Kōtsū Iizaka Line for the final 20-minute journey to Iizaka Onsen Station. The total travel time is around 2 to 2.5 hours, making it feasible for a day trip from Tokyo. Remember that only the shinkansen portion is covered by JR Rail Passes, and you will need to purchase a separate ticket for the Iizaka Line segment.

Great little onsen town very easily accessed from Fukushima. A lot of the restaurants and eateries do not open until later in the afternoon. Great street walks for photo opportunities of the surrounding snow-capped mountains and the river that runs within the town. Quaint train ride of 20 minutes from Fukushima. Good free hot spring foot baths scattered within minutes walking from the station.

This charming town offers a great opportunity to stroll around and enjoy the foot and hand baths. I didn't have the courage to enter the extremely hot springs (lol). There's only one ticket machine, so you might have to wait in line, so it's best to allow plenty of time. You can use electronic money and transportation IC cards. Credit cards are accepted.

The gateway to Iizaka Onsen. Iizaka Onsen town unfolds from here. There are numerous public baths and foot baths scattered throughout the town, so feel free to drop in whenever you like. Iizaka Onsen is one of Japan's 100 most famous hot springs, so you'll warm your body from the inside out. If you're stopping by Hotel Juraku's Hanamomo Onsen♨️, you can either take the shuttle bus or walk for just under 15 minutes. There's also a great value package that includes a lunch buffet and a bath break, so why not spend the whole day relaxing?
