Kajo Park

Kajo Park in Yamagata City, Japan, occupies the grounds of the former Yamagata Castle, which dates back to 1357 when it was first established by Shiba Kaneyori. The castle reached its peak during the early Edo period under the rule of Mogami Yoshiaki, who expanded it into one of the largest castle complexes in the Tohoku region with an impressive 570,000 square meters of territory. Though the castle buildings were demolished during the Meiji Restoration in 1872, the original stone walls and moats remain as significant historical features.

The park holds particular cultural importance as one of Japan's premier cherry blossom viewing destinations, featuring approximately 1,500 cherry trees of various species including Yoshino cherry and weeping cherry. During spring, the contrast between the ancient stone fortifications and delicate pink blossoms creates a distinctive landscape that draws visitors from across Japan. The park was designated a National Historic Site in 1986, recognizing its architectural and historical value to Japanese feudal history.

Visitors can walk along the preserved stone ramparts and cross reconstructed bridges over the water-filled moats that once protected the castle. The park contains several monuments and stone markers explaining the castle's layout and history. A small museum near the eastern gate displays artifacts excavated from the site, including roof tiles, pottery fragments, and military equipment. The elevated position of the former castle keep provides panoramic views of Yamagata City and the surrounding mountains.

Yamagata Station serves as the main access point, located approximately 1 kilometer south of the park. The walk takes roughly 15 minutes on foot, or visitors can take a local bus that stops directly at the park's main entrance. Entry to the park grounds is free year-round, though the museum charges a modest admission fee of around 300 yen. The park remains accessible throughout the year, with each season offering different atmospheric conditions from snow-covered ramparts in winter to vibrant autumn foliage.
