Kamigamo Shrine, officially known as Kamo-wakeikazuchi Jinja, stands as one of Kyoto's oldest and most significant Shinto shrines. Established in 678 CE, though its origins may date back even earlier to the 6th century, it predates the founding of Kyoto itself. Together with its sister shrine Shimogamo, Kamigamo forms part of the Kamo Shrine complex, both designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1994 as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.

The shrine is dedicated to Wake-ikazuchi-no-kami, the deity of thunder and protection, believed to have descended onto nearby Mt. Kōyama. For centuries, Kamigamo served as a guardian shrine for the imperial capital and has maintained close ties with the Imperial family. The shrine complex features distinctive architectural elements including its striking vermillion haiden (worship hall) and honden (main sanctuary), both exemplary specimens of the nagare-zukuri architectural style characterized by extended, asymmetrical roof lines.

Visitors enter through a broad gravel path flanked by traditional earthen walls and approach the shrine via the iconic Tatezuna, two cone-shaped mounds of white sand believed to purify visitors and serve as sacred landmarks. The Hosodono, a series of small shrine buildings, and the expansive grounds featuring a stream where ritual purification ceremonies take place, offer peaceful exploration opportunities. The shrine is particularly renowned for its Aoi Matsuri festival held on May 15th annually, one of Kyoto's three great festivals featuring imperial messengers in Heian-period costumes.

Kamigamo Shrine is located in northern Kyoto, approximately 30 minutes by bus from Kyoto Station. Take Kyoto City Bus #4 or #46 to the Kamigamo-jinja-mae stop. Alternatively, the Karasuma subway line to Kitayama Station followed by a 20-minute walk provides access. Entry to the shrine grounds is free, though donations are appreciated. The shrine offers special viewing of inner buildings for a fee of ¥500.

Wonderful opportunity to see the annual Kasagake horseback archery ritual on 19th October. There was easy bicycle parking and the event was very well organised, free entry and even English commentary (will watch again on YouTube!) so impressive to witness! The organisers really made it accessible, there was meet and greet with the archers and horses and as a tourist I felt very welcome. We were able to watch the rituals including the sake drinking, and the procession after.

Beautiful and very relaxing shrine. We had the back section with the torii gates basically to ourselves for a whole hour even though he down the bottom at the main temple was very busy due to New years first visits.

Free to enter and look around, with fantastic shrines, gardens and streams. It also has a pretty nice Goshuin available if you're into collecting them.
