Katsuren Castle Ruins, perched atop a steep hill on the eastern coast of Okinawa, are steeped in history and legend. Known as the "Castle in the Sea," these ruins offer a glimpse into the Ryukyu Kingdom's past and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Pacific Ocean and Uruma City.

The castle, which dates back to the 14th century, was once the residence of the famous Lord Amawari, a figure shrouded in intrigue and folklore. Amawari was known both for his political cunning and the dramatic rise and fall of his power within the kingdom. Exploring the ruins, visitors can walk among the massive limestone walls and foundations that have withstood centuries of history, imagining the once-thriving castle bustling with Ryukyuan warriors and aristocrats.

Katsuren Castle is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated not only for its historical significance but also for its architectural uniqueness. The site’s design showcases the strategic military thinking of the time, with walls and placements expertly calculated to use the natural landscape for defence.

What other travelers are saying about Katsuren Castle Ruins

Interesting museum and castle. We went on a Saturday in January and it wasn’t crowded at all. They have a trolley that takes you up to the castle hill if you prefer not to walk (it’s quite steep and curvy). Beautiful views of Uruma and surrounding ocean. It was a clear day and we could see so far off! Bring binoculars! Lots of interesting informational signs telling us about the castle and what each area was for. Much more informative than Zakimi. The steps up the castle walls are a bit treacherous but manageable with tennis house and good balance 😅

Personally I think the best view of the castle is from the entrance. I am not a huge fan of the Okinawan castles because all of them are ruins. I think there are similar ones that are better in my opinion. The view from the top is good but not breathtaking. You can visit here if you are around but don’t go all the way just to come here. There’s free parking and a museum nearby as well.

A scenic historical spot with a great ocean view. The castle sits on a large hill made of Ryukyu limestone. One cool fact is that ancient Roman and medieval Ottoman coins were discovered here in 2016 — the first time Roman coins were ever found in Japan.

Fascinating place to visit. We arrived late in the day and only had about half an hour to walk the grounds. This monthly weren't able to enter the museum. However, walking the grounds alone is well worth the price of admission it's a beautiful place with breathtaking views of Uruma and the surrounding areas. Well worth the visit!
