Katsuura Morning Market began in 1591 when the Katsuura castle lord, Yasutada Uemura, established it as a trading hub for agricultural and marine products. Dating back over 400 years to the Momoyama period (1573-1600), this historic market has operated continuously for more than 430 years. The market's original purpose was to connect local communities through trade, fostering relationships between farmers, fishermen, and townspeople. In November 1987, the market was relocated to its present location, and it has hosted national morning market summits in both 1996 and 2010.

Katsuura Morning Market ranks as one of Japan's three largest morning markets, alongside those in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, and Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. The market features approximately 80 merchant stalls that serve as the heart of local commerce and community life. Located near Katsuura Fishing Port, which is Chiba Prefecture's second-largest fishing port after Choshi, the market benefits from direct access to fresh seafood, particularly the region's famous bonito catch. The market attracts approximately 200,000 visitors annually, functioning both as a local marketplace and tourist destination.

Visitors can experience authentic Japanese market culture while purchasing fresh seafood directly from local fishermen and seasonal produce from area farmers. The market offers marine produce, home-grown fruits and vegetables, traditional pickles, and Japanese sweets. The market operates daily except Wednesdays throughout the year. From the 1st to 15th of each month, the market is held on Shimohoncho Asaichi Street, and from the 16th to month's end on Nakahoncho Asaichi Street. The market is located approximately 90 minutes by train from Tokyo. Visitors should take the JR Sotobo Line to Katsuura Station, then walk 10 minutes to reach the market streets. There is no admission fee to enter the market area.
