Kezoji Amusement Park

Kezoji Amusement Park is a traditional Japanese theme park located in Tochigi Prefecture, approximately 90 kilometers north of Tokyo. Established in 1961, the park was designed as a family-oriented destination that combines classic carnival attractions with Japanese cultural elements, making it one of the country's older regional amusement parks that has maintained its retro charm while adapting to modern visitor expectations.

The park holds particular significance as a representation of Japan's post-war economic recovery period, when domestic tourism and leisure activities became increasingly accessible to ordinary families. Its vintage roller coaster, built in 1975, remains one of the few original wooden coasters still operating in Japan and is considered a cultural artifact of the Showa era entertainment industry. The park's design incorporates traditional Japanese garden elements alongside Western-style rides, creating a unique fusion that reflects Japan's cultural adaptation during the mid-20th century.

Visitors can experience approximately 25 attractions spread across the 15-hectare site, including the historic wooden roller coaster, a Ferris wheel offering views of the surrounding Kanto Plain, traditional carnival games, and a small zoo featuring native Japanese animals. The park's observation tower, standing 45 meters tall, provides panoramic views of nearby Mount Nasu on clear days. Family-friendly rides dominate the attraction lineup, with several options specifically designed for young children, including a miniature railway that circles the park grounds.

Seasonal variations significantly impact the park experience. Spring brings cherry blossom viewing opportunities in the park's landscaped areas, while summer features extended operating hours and additional water-based attractions. Autumn offers spectacular foliage views from elevated rides, particularly the Ferris wheel and observation tower. The park operates on reduced hours during winter months (December through February), with some outdoor attractions temporarily closed due to weather conditions.

The park is accessible via JR Tohoku Line to Kuroiso Station, followed by a 20-minute bus ride on the local municipal bus system. Direct buses operate from the station approximately every 30 minutes during peak seasons and hourly during off-peak periods. For visitors traveling by car, the park provides free parking for up to 500 vehicles and is located 10 minutes from the Tohoku Expressway Nasu IC exit.

Admission costs ¥1,200 for adults and ¥800 for children under 12, with ride tickets sold separately at ¥300-600 per attraction or as unlimited day passes for ¥2,800 (adults) and ¥2,200 (children). Operating hours are typically 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM during standard season and 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM during summer months. The park is closed on Wednesdays from November through March, except during school holiday periods.
