Kinosaki Onsen Ropeway

The Kinosaki Onsen Ropeway transports visitors from the historic hot spring town of Kinosaki to the summit of Mount Taishi (also known as Daishi-yama), standing at 231 meters above sea level. Operating since 1963, this aerial lift has provided generations of travelers with panoramic views over the town's traditional streets, the Maruyama River valley, and the Sea of Japan coastline. The ropeway connects seamlessly with Kinosaki's celebrated onsen culture, offering a natural complement to the thermal bathing experience below.

The seven-minute journey ascends approximately 676 meters in length, carrying passengers in small gondolas that hold around 4 to 6 people each. At the summit, visitors find Onsenji Temple, a Buddhist temple with over 1,300 years of history that is closely associated with the founding legends of Kinosaki Onsen itself. According to tradition, the monk Dōchi Shōnin discovered the hot springs here in 720 AD after praying for a thousand days. The temple grounds offer observation decks where visitors can appreciate seasonal changes, from cherry blossoms in spring to autumn foliage and occasional winter snow.

The experience combines spiritual heritage with natural beauty. Walking paths around the summit lead through forested areas and past stone monuments, while the temple precinct includes traditional architecture and religious artifacts. The views extend across the town's distinctive layout, where visitors can spot the various public bathhouses that define Kinosaki's character. On clear days, the perspective reaches the distant mountains of the Tajima region and the expanse of the Japan Sea.

The ropeway station sits approximately 15 minutes on foot from Kinosaki Onsen Station, accessible via a pleasant walk through the town's willow-lined canal streets. Visitors typically combine the ropeway excursion with onsen bathing and strolling in yukata robes. Access to Kinosaki Onsen itself is via the JR San-in Line, with limited express trains connecting to major cities including Kyoto (approximately 2.5 hours) and Osaka.

What other travelers are saying about Kinosaki Onsen Ropeway

We were fortunate to witness such a stunning view from the top on a foggy morning, making it a highlight of our trip. I guess whether it’s worth going up really depends on the weather, but it’s still a decent spot to visit. We spent only about 10 minutes at the top, as there wasn’t much to see further down the road. I’d recommend taking the ropeway up to the top, then descending halfway to the temple before continuing down via the stair trail, which is only about 15-min walk.

Just enjoy what has to offer. Short ride ropeway. A view to the sea. Temple and shrine. Needs to climb the stairs to get to the Ropeway. Elderly with joints pain might find difficulty here. There is a cafe with a view too.

A really nice view at the top. It was the end of the day so I just went for a short time. Though the cafe looks nice to relax at. I bought jr west Kansai wide area pass from klook which included kinosaki must visit 3 day pass. This includes round trip on the ropeway. You can pick up the pass at the tourist center in front of the train station.

Great morning ride up to take some photos. Recommended way to spend a couple of hours before all of the onsen open for the day.

This is a great ropeway which goes up to the top of the mountain, and you should really check it out if you go to Kinosaki. Go there after a bath at an onsen in town. There is a cafe at the top and a lookout and I think a few chin-up bars too.

Yes. Hiking trails from the base reach the summit in 30 to 40 minutes. You can combine walking one direction with riding the ropeway the other way.
