Korankei Valley

Korankei Valley, located in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan's most celebrated autumn foliage destinations. The valley follows the Tomoe River and centers around Kojaku-ji Temple, a Buddhist temple founded in 1427 during the Muromachi period. The temple's chief priest, Sanei Osho, initiated the planting of maple trees along the valley in the 17th century as a form of religious practice, beginning a tradition that continued for generations. Today, approximately 4,000 maple trees of eleven different varieties line the valley and surrounding hillsides, creating a spectacular display that draws visitors from across Japan.

The valley's cultural significance extends beyond its natural beauty. Kojaku-ji Temple remains an active place of worship and features traditional architecture including a main hall and vermillion-lacquered Taigetsukyo Bridge, which serves as an iconic focal point against the autumn colors. The temple grounds also house the Sanshutei Teahouse, where visitors can experience traditional Japanese tea ceremony while overlooking the valley. The area has been carefully preserved to maintain its historical character, with stone pathways and traditional lanterns enhancing the atmospheric setting.

Visitors to Korankei experience the autumn foliage spectacle typically from mid-November to early December, when the maples turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. The valley offers several walking trails of varying difficulty, with the main pathway following the river providing easy access to key viewpoints. Evening illuminations during peak season extend viewing opportunities after dark, creating dramatic lighting effects on the foliage. Beyond autumn, the valley attracts visitors year-round for its spring cherry blossoms, summer greenery, and winter landscapes.

Korankei Valley is accessible from Nagoya Station by taking the Meitetsu Toyota Line to Umetsubo Station, followed by a 10-minute bus ride on the Meitetsu Bus to Korankei stop. By car, the valley is approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Nagoya, roughly one hour's drive via the Tomei Expressway. Admission to the valley is free, though parking fees apply during peak autumn season and can reach ¥1,000 per vehicle. The Sanshutei Teahouse charges a separate fee for tea ceremony experiences. Visitors should note that the area becomes extremely crowded during peak foliage weekends, with traffic congestion common on approach roads.
