What other travelers are saying about Yoshida Castle, Toyohashi
Free to go inside the castle.
They have some scenery.
They have a good park and museum around it.
It's good to use the tram train from Toyohashi station to the museum.
Lovely little castle. From the lawn, it's quite nice. The entrance is free, but the inner museum isn't very well kept. Maybe even a 100 yen entrance fee would help maintain it. Still, any original or rebuilt castle is worth a visit. Nice view of the river from the top.
Old Japanese style castle, located in the north west corner of the park, on the top of river bank.
Historical royal palace in tougher TOYOHASHI city hall. We visited in new year but unfortunately we can’t enter the palace because it’s close in holiday.
It is a castle with a history that Tadatsugu Sakai was the first vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu to receive it. I want you to restore Honmaru and so on.
Only the stone walls, moats, and earthwork foundations survive from the original castle structure. The Kurogane Turret visible today is a 1954 reconstruction that houses a small museum. The authentic remains primarily consist of the castle's defensive features, including portions of the stone ramparts and the moat system that once protected the fortress. These original elements are now integrated into Toyohashi Park.
Entry to the castle grounds and Toyohashi Park is completely free. However, if you wish to enter the reconstructed Kurogane Turret museum to view the historical exhibits of armor, weapons, and documents, there is a small admission fee of ¥100 for adults. This makes it one of the most affordable castle sites to visit in Japan.
Spring is the most popular season, particularly during cherry blossom season when approximately 1,000 cherry trees bloom throughout the park, creating a spectacular display. The combination of pink blossoms against the stone walls and turret makes for memorable photography. However, the castle grounds are open year-round and offer a peaceful urban park experience in any season.
Take the JR Tōkaidō Main Line or Meitetsu Nagoya Line from Nagoya to Toyohashi Station, which takes approximately 30 minutes by express train. From Toyohashi Station, the castle is about a 15-minute walk. The route is straightforward and well-signposted through the city center to Toyohashi Park where the castle ruins are located.
Yoshida Castle occupied a strategic position along the Tōkaidō road, the main highway connecting Kyoto and Edo during feudal times. Its location made it a contested prize during the Warring States period, and it played a significant role in the power struggles between major clans including the Imagawa and Tokugawa. The Battle of Yoshida Castle in 1575 was particularly notable, with the fortress serving as a key stronghold for Tokugawa Ieyasu's forces in the region.
