Koriyama Castle Ruins in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture, is a historic site from Japan’s feudal era. Built in the 16th century by Tsutsui Junkei, it later became a stronghold under Hidenaga Toyotomi, the brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Hidenaga expanded the castle, turning the area into a political and economic center.

The castle was abandoned in the Meiji period when feudal structures were dismantled. Today, visitors can see the remains of stone walls, moats, and foundations. In spring, the cherry blossoms attract many visitors, especially during the annual festival. Now a public park, the site preserves the legacy of its samurai past.

What other travelers are saying about Koriyama Castle Ruins

Went on a Sunday during cherry blossom season, while there’s a Castle Festival, lots of locals camping under the trees & kids playing around, lots of food stalls & super crowded. Eating, drinking, hanging out, & chilling with family & friends, as how a Sunday should be. For foreign tourists, if you want to avoid the crowds, better go on a weekday. Castle is nice but really not that much to see or history to learn about.

A lesser know place good for plum and cherry blossoms. There is an interesting shrine surrounded by many tanks of goldfish. Japan's oldest library is also located here, relocated from it's original location in Nara Park.

nice view on top, but nothing more. This castle is ruin. There is a small shrine on middle, it looks nice. May be you should visit in cherry blossom season, it is better.

Beautiful historical site with a nice cafe (very dog friendly). If you were debating if it's worth coming to the Koriyama Castle Ruins, do it. It's a very relaxing space with a nice overlook of the city and informative resources.

It’s a leisurely stroll through castle grounds with a beautiful view of Nara City. The cherry blossoms are not yet blooming but it’s still pretty beautiful here. There’s a spring festival with lots of yummy food and activities for children. At night the lanterns are very pretty. Parking is free at the back. There’s an entrance from the back as well through the school path.
