Kumamon Square, Kumamoto

4.1 (3622)Shopping MallStorePoint Of InterestEstablishment

Kumamon Square serves as the official headquarters and activity base for Kumamon, Japan's beloved black bear mascot who holds the unique title of Sales and Happiness Manager of Kumamoto Prefecture. Officially a public servant, Kumamon helps promote Kumamoto Prefecture's publicity, making this attraction both an entertainment venue and a cultural phenomenon representing modern Japanese mascot culture.

The facility opened as the base of operations for Kumamon and has become one of Kumamoto's most recognizable tourist destinations. Beyond its role as a mascot headquarters, Kumamon Square represents Japan's distinctive approach to regional promotion through character marketing, where local governments employ mascots to boost tourism and local pride.

This spot features a 360-degree stage where Kumamon performs daily, along with Instagram-worthy photo spots, AR games on large screens, and a variety of interactive experiences. Visitors can witness the real Kumamon come to work at his office promoting the prefecture, sometimes also singing and dancing during seasonal events. Kumamon can be found in his office on weekdays at 3pm, or on weekends and holidays on stage at 11:30am and 3:00pm, though visitors should check the official website for current performance schedules.

The attraction includes all kinds of Kumamon-related merchandise, snacks, and memorabilia, plus a snack corner where you can try Kumamon latte or a Kumamon softserve ice cream. Additional interactive elements include photo opportunities designed for social media sharing and augmented reality games that appeal to visitors of all ages.

Kumamon Square is located on the first floor of the Tetoria Kumamoto Building next to Tsuruya Department Store at Tetorihoncho 8-2, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City. Transportation is highly convenient via Kumamoto's tram system. From JR Kumamoto Station, it takes about 17 minutes to take the tram to Suidomachi Station; if you depart from Kumamoto Sakuramachi, it only takes 6 minutes by tram. The attraction is located right next to the Suidocho tram stop, making it easily accessible for visitors exploring Kumamoto's other attractions by public transport.

What other travelers are saying about Kumamon Square, Kumamoto

My visit to Kumamon Square was a bit of a mixed experience. While it holds undeniable appeal for fans of Japan's beloved bear mascot, some practical issues hampered the trip. The biggest initial challenge was actually finding the place. The instructions and signage in the area weren't very clear, leading to some confusion and extra time spent navigating. Better directional signs would greatly improve the visitor experience from the start. Once inside, I found it to be a true merchandise haven for Kumamon enthusiasts. The variety of unique and cute items was impressive and fun to browse — from stationery and clothing to snacks and souvenirs you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. It’s a great spot to pick up a special gift or memento. However, the space itself is surprisingly small. It can feel crowded very quickly, which makes browsing less relaxed. The main disappointment, though, was missing the famed Kumamon show. His appearance times are limited, and without careful planning (or luck), it's easy to miss him, which was a letdown given that seeing the character in action is a major draw for many. Verdict: A worthwhile quick stop for dedicated fans wanting to shop, but set your expectations. It’s more of a boutique store than a major attraction. To maximize your visit, absolutely check the official Kumamon appearance schedule in advance and factor in some extra time to locate the entrance. Rating: 3/5 Stars (Deducted for poor signage, cramped space, and the easily-missed show.)

Date visited end June 2025. Google map said I have reached but I didn’t see any sign. It is actually inside the same building as the shopping Centre which is located next to shopping arcade. A very small shop selling Kumamoto signature stuffs. A small stage where the bear mascot will perform at 11 and at 2pm. Enter into the shopping malls and you can see directions to reach this small shop. A very small place - in less than five minutes I am done. Things aren’t that cheap either. Kids may like it to dance with the bear. I walked around basements of the shopping malls instead to enjoy the aircon when it is so hot outside.

Hordes of tourists come here to see the Kumamon show, which is more suited for kids. If you want to catch the show, be sure to check the schedule and start lining up at least 30 mins early if you want a front row spot. Outside of the show times, it feels like a generic tourist/souvenir shop.
