Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, Imabari

The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is the world's longest series of suspension bridges, spanning 4,015 meters across the Seto Inland Sea in Japan. Completed in 1999, this engineering marvel forms part of the Nishiseto Expressway, commonly known as the Shimanami Kaido, which connects Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. The bridge consists of three consecutive suspension bridges linking the islands of Oshima, Mishima, and Umashima, representing one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in modern Japanese history.

The bridge holds significant importance as part of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Project, which established three vital transportation routes linking Japan's main island of Honshu with Shikoku. Its construction required innovative engineering solutions to overcome the strong tidal currents of the Kurushima Strait, historically one of the most treacherous waterways for maritime navigation. The structure has become an iconic symbol of the region's connectivity and stands as a testament to Japanese engineering prowess.

Visitors can experience the bridge in several distinctive ways. The Shimanami Kaido cycling route, stretching approximately 70 kilometers, is particularly popular, offering dedicated cycling paths that run parallel to the expressway and provide stunning views of the bridge and surrounding islands. Cyclists can access the bridge via specific on-ramps on Oshima Island. The Kirosan Observatory Park on Oshima offers panoramic views of all three suspension spans and the Seto Inland Sea, making it an ideal photography location, especially during sunset.

The bridge can be accessed by car via the Shimanami Kaido expressway, with tolls applicable for vehicles crossing between the islands. Cyclists and pedestrians pay a nominal fee of 200 yen for the entire Shimanami Kaido route. The nearest major city is Imabari, accessible by train from major cities like Hiroshima and Osaka, followed by local bus or bicycle rental to reach the bridge area. Onomichi on the opposite end serves as an alternative gateway. Bicycle rental stations are available at both endpoints and on several islands along the route, with one-way rental options facilitating flexible travel plans.
